About the Department
General Definition of Work:
Performs difficult medical services and care for the inmates at the Rockingham-Harrisonburg Regional Jail; does work as required.
Supervision:
The Jail Nurse works under the direct supervision of the Medical Team Administrator and under the general supervision of the Jail Captain through the chain of command to the Sheriff.
Typical Tasks:
Maintains the medical care of all inmates; oversees the medical property and equipment; cleanliness of the medical unit; orders maintenance; cleaning, conducts daily inspections and counts in the medical unit; prepares maintains and reviews a variety of reports on inmate’s medical records; conducts medical rounds and sick call for inmates.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of the modern medical practices within the penology setting; ability to carry out oral and written directions accurately; detailed with records and reports. The ability to work and coordinate with a wide range of medical professionals and mental health services. Physical ability to walk stairs and work required shifts.
Education and Experience:
The Jail Nurse must have a high school diploma or its equivalent, must have at minimum an ATP letter or a License Practical nurse with a current unrestricted VA state license, courses in first aid and CPR, and extensive experience in nursing.
Special Requirements:
Possession of a valid driver's license.
