EDUCATION   & EXPERIENCE

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered. 

   

Level 1 - Grade 4 - No Degree required.  Any combination of education and experience equivalent to maintenance experience.

Level II - Grade 5 - No Degree required.  Minimum of two (2) years of experience in operating light-to-medium equipment, 

understanding of operation and maintenance requirements of commercial trucks.

Level III - Grade 6 - No Degree required. Minimum of four (4) years of experience in operating light-to-medium equipment: and 

with a minimum of one (1) year of supervisory experience.  May serve as a team lead.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Maintenance Workers (MW) work in a variety of Public Works and Utilities construction, maintenance, and repair projects. May be required to operate nonspecialized equipment in connection with manual tasks. Must have the ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions. Career progression into a Motor Equipment Operator I – V is optional. Work is performed under minimal supervision. 


MW I duties include, but are not limited to: 

  • Knowledge & Safety: Basic working knowledge of general construction practices and principles. Basic knowledge of regulations governing equipment operation and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance repair and/or equipment. 
  • Equipment Operations: Operating light and medium-sized construction equipment as qualified with some basic experience or ability to operate a front-end loader to load materials into dumpsters, etc. 
  • Manual/General Labor: May assist with specific and/or variety of the following tasks: loading/unloading of gravel, dirt, timber, chemicals, tools, equipment, and other materials. Assists with the construction of utility lines and facilities. Performs various landscaping duties throughout the Town such as mowing; weed eating; trimming tree limbs; picking up leaves, limbs, trash, and other household debris; and lifts and loads garbage and trash onto garbage trucks. Assists with the routine inspections of equipment and the repair, maintenance, and installation of street signs and road markings. Performs custodial, building and grounds maintenance work. Collects and disposes of solid waste including dead animals and litter from buildings and grounds, parks, roads, roadsides and sidewalks.
  • Additional Tasks: Assists as needed to accomplish a variety of Public Works or Public Utilities tasks.  


MW II includes Level I duties in addition to, but are not limited to: 

  • Knowledge & Safety: General knowledge of general construction practices and principles. Basic knowledge of regulations governing equipment operation and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance repair and/or equipment.
  • Equipment Operations: Operating light to heavy sized construction equipment as qualified. 


MW III includes Level I and II duties in addition to, but are not limited to: 

  •  Knowledge & Safety: Thorough knowledge of general construction practices and principles. Basic knowledge of regulations governing equipment operation and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance repair and/or equipment.
  • People Operations: May serve as lead worker; instructs and trains crew members; assists with coordinating and directing crews on site. May be requested to exercise supervision over crew members in the absence of the Crew Supervisor.

CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSURES

 

All Levels: 

Valid Virginia (VA) Driver’s License - Must have upon hire. If relocating to VA, a valid VA drivers’ license is required to be obtained

within 1 year from date of hire.

 

VDOT Flagger Certification - Must obtain and maintain within 1 year from date of hire

 

Basic Work Zone Certification - Must obtain and maintain within 1 year from date of hire. May   also have VDOT certifications that

are equivalent to Basic Work Zone.

 

CJIS/VCIN Access, as applicable. - If assisting with Town facility maintenance, must obtain and maintain VCIN contractor level 

clearance. Will also be subject to fingerprinting   and additional background check.

 

Level II - Commercial Drivers Licensure (CDL) - Must possess or obtain within one (1) year a Class B CDL valid in the state of 

Virginia.

Level III - Commercial Drivers Licensure (CDL) - Must possess or obtain within one (1) year a Class A CDL valid in the state of 

Virginia.

  

SUCCESS FRAMEWORK. The following list of knowledge, skills, and abilities have been identified by our team as building blocks towards efficiency and effectiveness in this position. 

  • Knowledge of general construction operations as well as knowledge of OSHA compliance standards.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with supervisors, members of the general public, employees, Town Officials and others involved in performance of job duties; ability to assemble reports in a concise, clear and effective manner.
  • Ability to use independent judgement and work with little direct supervision. 
  • Ability to operate a computer, and other office equipment needed to perform job duties, proficiency in various software, including Microsoft Office suite; and excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment.

EQUIPMENT & TOOLS. The following equipment/tools are commonly associated with the efficiency of the employees’ job performance.

  • Personal computer including word processing software, printer, telephone/cellphone, calculator, copy machine, fax machine, and other associated office equipment.
  • May be required to operate light to heavy construction equipment to include, but not limited to motorized vehicles, mowers, chain saws, pumps, mixers, trimmers, cement saw, air hammer, use a variety of hand and power tools (such as hammers, shovels, wrenches, jack hammers, tampers, pavement saws, pip wrenches, broomes, rackes, and flushers).

*PHYSICAL ABILITIES. These physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform essential functions of the job. 

  • Work requires the ability to talk, hear, listen, and comprehend. 
  • Work requires the ability to drive and/or operate mechanical equipment.
  • Work requires the ability to sit, stand, walk for extended periods of time.
  • Work requires the ability to complete repetitive wrist, hand, and/or fine motor movement.
  • Work requires the ability to grasp, pull, push, climb, balance, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl.
  • Work requires visual acuity of 20 feet or more, visual acuity of 20 inches or less, three dimensional vision, precise hand/eye coordination, the ability to identify and distinguish colors, the ability to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Manual/General labor of medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects, and some heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects

WORK ENVIRONMENT. The following are possible atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job. 

  • May occasionally be exposed to uncomfortable temperatures, humidity, noise, chemicals or gasses, contagious diseases, airborne particles or pathogens, and/or physical trauma.
  • May be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, biohazards, or bloodborne pathogens.
  • Work may potentially involve risk of exposure to electric shock.
