About the Equipment Services Division:

The Equipment Services Division ensures the reliability and safety of the City’s fleet by maintaining more than 2,000 vehicles and pieces of equipment that support essential services—police, fire, sanitation, parks, and public works. Our technicians are the heartbeat of city operations, providing expert maintenance and repair that keep Greensboro’s essential services on the move. Compensation and Benefits: 
Hiring Salary Range: $42,072. - $59,233.   Full Salary Range: $40,452. - $77,458.   Annually

First Shift Monday - Thursday 6:00 am - 4:30 pm

About the Role:

This entry-level position performs skilled tasks in maintaining and repairing a variety of automotive, light- and medium-duty trucks, and light/medium off-road equipment such as trimmers, blowers, saws, generators, and weed eaters. Employees in this journey-level classification are fully trained in all procedures related to assigned areas of responsibility and perform preventive maintenance, NC safety inspections, and general repairs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on automotive, light/medium-duty trucks, and off-road equipment

  • Conduct North Carolina safety inspections and prepare vehicles/equipment for service readiness

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical issues, replacing or repairing components as needed

  • Ensure safe work practices and compliance with environmental and occupational safety standards

  • Maintain accurate service records and communicate repair needs to supervisors

  • Work collaboratively with Equipment Services Supervisors, upper management, and Master Technicians

  • Keep work areas clean, organized, and in compliance with City standards

Physical Requirements:
This position involves walking, stooping, bending, climbing, and lifting up to 50 lbs. Work may include exposure to dust, grease, noise, heat, cold, and inclement weather.

Special Requirements:

  • Must obtain NC Emission/Safety Inspection License and Air Conditioning Recovery Certification within six (6) months of hire date

  • Must provide own tools

  • Position is classified as Non-Exempt

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum  Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED 
    • "OR" an equivalency of education and 2+ years of "related"  experience
  • 4+ years of documented Journey Level experience in Automotive/Light/Medium duty vehicles, trucks (non-diesel), and Light/Medium duty off-road equipment maintenance.  
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Emission/Safety Inspection License and Air Conditioning Recovery Certification ("OR" the ability to obtain within 6 months from hire date) 
  • Class C Driver's License. 


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate Degree in Automotive Systems Technology, Heavy Equipment & Transport Technology or "related" field
  • 5 years experience in Automotive/Light/Medium duty vehicles, trucks (non-diesel), and Light/Medium duty off-road equipment maintenance 
  • Emission/Safety Inspection License
  • ASE Certifications on Automotive Series. 
  • Emission/Safety Inspection License and Air Conditioning Recovery Certification
