Job Purpose
The ACGME requires that institutions sponsoring GME programs be led by a Designated Institutional Official (DIO) in collaboration with a Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC), and that they must have authority and responsibility for the oversight and administration of the Sponsoring Institution’s programs and responsibility for assuring compliance with ACGME Common, specialty/subspecialty specific Program, and Institutional Requirements. The DIO establishes clear expectations and communicates effectively to all GME staff and physicians.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as first contact with the ACGME, NRMP, and other GME organizations.
Participation in the Institutional governance of the GME programs
Serves as chair of the GMEC Committee ensuring compliance with this committee’s responsibilities as outlined by the ACGME Institutional Requirements.
Maintain accurate and complete institutional GME files in compliance with ACGME and with institutional records retention policies.
Builds upon accreditation requirements to improve the quality of the institution’s overall GME enterprise.
Develop the strategic plan and growth for Graduate Medical Education at Piedmont Athens Regional.
Write the Annual Institutional Review (AIR) including:
Most recent ACGME institutional letter of notification,
Results of ACGME survey of residents/fellows and faculty,
Each of its ACGME-accredited programs’ ACMGE accreditation information, including accreditation statuses and citations.
An executive summary of the AIR must be presented to the Sponsoring Institution’s Governing Body.
Establishes and implements procedures to ensure that all program information forms (PIF) are co-signed including any correspondence, or documentation submitted to the ACGME by the program directors that either addresses program citations or request changes in the programs that have a significant programmatic or financial impact on the program or institution.
Provides leadership and overall responsibility for the function of GME. Provides guidance and direction to program directors, oversees formation and usage of program budget, and implements policies and procedures for department functioning.
Presents regular reports to the Medical Staff addressing GMEC activities. This report will review the activities including supervision, responsibilities, evaluations, the Sponsoring Institution’s participating hospitals’ and programs’ compliance with the duty-hour standards and safety and quality of patient care provided by residents
Ensure that programs provide an educational curriculum as defined by the ACGME Program Requirements for the specialty.
Conduct educational workshops for programs.
Establish GME Institutional Policies. Makes budgetary recommendations in line with regulations and accreditation standards.
Responsible for the organization, staffing, planning, budgeting, training, orientation, monitoring and quality improvement of GME. Ensures that personnel adhere to hospital, departmental performance and regulatory standards and guidelines.
Meet with Residents / Fellows regarding GME concerns
Attend Resident Council and House staff meetings.
Ensures that the residency programs are aligned to meet institutional fiscal goals.
Establish, develop, and maintain relationships with medical schools, community physicians, and outreach.

Qualifications:
Preferred Education: terminal degree (MD, DO, PhD)
5+ years of Graduate Medical Education Experience
