About the Department

The Department of Public Works builds, maintains, and operates the physical facilities that support and enhance the lives of Norfolk’s citizens, businesses, and visitors, including the City’s Street Network, Storm Water System and Waste Management and Recycling Systems. The Department is comprised of 8 divisions that function collectively to make your commute safe and efficient, your neighborhood more attractive, and the streets and sidewalks clean and well-maintained.
The Division of Streets & Bridges strives to make vehicle and pedestrian traffic throughout Norfolk pleasant and safe by repairing potholes, road repairs, broken sidewalks, curbs, and gutters. The Division is also responsible for grading shoulders and medians and responding to emergencies by removing ice, snow, and storm debris.
This Equipment Operator II position is in a Public Works Crew who performs permanent repairs and maintenance in the city’s right of way. Types of repairs and maintenance are repairs made to sidewalks, curb and gutters, roadways, bridges, overpasses and underpasses, and shoulders. This position performs maintenance and repairs throughout the entire city.

Position Duties
Operates equipment assigned, such as trucks to transport other workers, equipment or supplies to and from job sites.
Operate equipment such as dump trucks, rollers, tractors, snowplows, concrete saws and various hand tools and power equipment in connection with maintenance of streets, sidewalks, and bridges.
Helps set up and grade areas for the laying of concrete, making utility cuts, and placing asphalt to finish grade.
Performs maintenance on City streets, sidewalks and bridges.
Performs minor maintenance and repairs on equipment.
Assist other employees on job sites with loading and unloading equipment.
Assists with cleaning of the work site areas and equipment.
Requires physical ability to stand, stoop, and bend.
Must be able to work in confined spaces.
Must be able to load and unload equipment and lift a maximum of 100 pounds.
Requires ability to understand oral and written instructions.
Must be able to drive standard and automatic transmission dump trucks and other construction equipment which requires climbing onto.
Must be able to operate concrete saws and various hand power tools and equipment.
Must be able to work in a boat in calm and rough water during the day or night.
Requires normal hearing, peripheral and night vision, and depth perception to safely operate heavy construction equipment in streets with high volume of traffic.
Minimum Qualifications
Two years operating heavy equipment or successful completion of a City apprenticeship program.
Other Qualifications
Must possess valid Commercial Drivers License. Must provide a copy of Division of Motor Vehicles Driving driving record (obtained within last 30 days) during interview.
Working Hours: Monday – Friday 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; 40 hours per week every week
