Salary Range:$120,000.00 To $195,000.00 Annually

 

About the job:

We are seeking an intermediate to senior-level professional architect to join our Building Envelope team in either Chicago or New York City. The ideal candidate has boundless curiosity (enjoys asking why things are done the way they are), a passion for high-caliber architecture, and an enthusiasm for outstanding delivery.  Energy and circularity will be transforming the way building envelopes are manufactured, designed, and constructed over the next decade.    This is your opportunity to be a part of a team that will learn, teach, test, and deliver the next generation of building envelope designs, repairs, reuse, and investigative solutions.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with design architecture firms and building owners/managers on exterior wall design assistance projects.
  • Collect and analyze data related to environmental, material fabrication, and construction practices.
  • Apply first principles and analytical methods to determine root causes of building envelope problems, including the root causes of air infiltration, water infiltration, condensation, thermal radiation, and solar radiation.
  • Develop recommendations for the repair or retrofit of envelope components based on assessment findings.
  • Prepare detailed engineering reports documenting observations, analyses, findings, and recommendations as the lead or as part of a team when needed.
  • Support expert witness projects, as needed.        Prepare and participate in depositions, as required.
  • Manage and oversee projects, ensuring deadlines and budget constraints are met.
  • Stay abreast of advancements in building envelope systems, energy codes, materials science, and design trends.
  • Experience with terra cotta, brick, or stone masonry systems – or Experience with a variety of window wall, curtainwall, skylight, and storefront systems.   Experience with both is an asset.
  • Explore markets in an area of your expertise and assist in business development activities toward meeting new technical peers and potential clients.
  • Proactively participate in professional development and thought leadership activities.
  • Mentor and coach peers, staff, and third parties.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's of Architecture or Architectural Engineering required; an Advanced degree (M / PhD) is an asset.
  • Experience: 5-10+ years of project experience in building envelope design, repair, and investigation.
  • Licensure: Registered Architect in either the state of New York or Illinois (or the ability to attain one of these within six months of hire).  Both are assets.
  • Certifications (For IL candidates only):  City of Chicago scaffold safety training certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of start.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills.  (Be willing to provide examples within the interview process)
  • Software Skills: Fluent in Autocad, Revit, Sketchup, Rhino, or Bluebeam.  More than one is an asset.
  • Project Management: Experience managing budgets and schedules, and leading projects.
  • Business Development: Experience with client engagement and presenting technical issues to Clients.        Experience assisting with proposal writing.

Physical and Travel Demands

  • Position may require some work to be completed in a field or laboratory environment, including work from heights or in confined spaces.
  • Enjoy 30% of the time in the field overseeing quality assurance observation or ASTM / AAMA / FGIA testing and assessment of existing conditions.
  • Up to 20% travel may be required at times for this position.
