JOB SUMMARY
The Staff Development Nurse integrates staff training with health information technology to improve patient care and outcomes. Working closely with clinical and operational leaders, this role develops training programs, enhances use of the Williamsburg Landing EMR system, streamlines workflows, ensures regulatory compliance, and supports EMR education across all departments—bridging clinical practice and technology to strengthen staff performance and care quality.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Respond to EMR-related service requests and provide targeted staff training based on clinical observations and quality data.
- Develop and deliver specialized in-service training programs for nursing staff, covering key clinical topics such as infection control, dementia care, medication administration, wound care, and resident safety—ensuring alignment with long-term care standards and best practices.
- Coordinate and facilitate onboarding education to ensure new clinical staff are familiar with facility policies, care protocols, and regulatory requirements, while continuously assessing educational needs and updating training materials to align with current clinical guidelines and resident care priorities.
- Collaborate with leadership to improve clinical workflows, enhance resident safety through technology, and develop onboarding and annual competency programs for licensed staff.
- Support quality assurance efforts by assessing clinical system needs and developing decision support tools, while providing ongoing education to nursing students, CNAs, and Medication Aides to ensure core competencies are met annually.
- Partner with IT leadership to enhance clinical system integration and workflow alignment, while creating EMR training materials and offering one-on-one coaching to improve staff proficiency.
- Oversee cross-platform system integrations and use appropriate technologies (e.g., ADT bridges, APIs), while analyzing clinical quality metrics to develop training programs that enhance resident outcomes and staff knowledge.
- Maintain thorough system documentation and train IT staff to support users during changes or outages, while advising leadership on audit-identified noncompliance and recommending targeted training solutions.
- Stay up to date on Net Smart updates and lead collaboration on system changes, testing, training, and adoption strategies.
- Conduct medical record audits to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, and ensure all clinical systems training (e.g., Relias) aligns with organizational structure and meets licensure, HIPAA, mandated reporting, and other regulatory requirements.
- Ensure that all clinical systems training, such as Relias hierarchies and learning plans, align with organizational structures and comply with healthcare regulations
- Perform any additional tasks and duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Current Commonwealth of Virginia Registered Nurse licensure, required
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), preferred
- 5+ years of clinical nursing and staff development experience required, preferably in a long-term care or geriatric care setting
- Demonstrated experience with EMR configuration, technical support, and user education
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Proficiency with API/ADT development/implementation required within six (6) months of hire
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of clinical workflows, data management, and nursing protocols and standards
- Ability to work cross functionally and collaboratively with operational and clinical leaders and third party vendors to meet technology challenges
- Excellent organizational and administrative skills and the ability to handle multiple priorities simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to communicate professionally and maintain working relationships with vendors
- Proficiency in all elements of needs assessment, instructional design and curricula development, clinical documentation and deliverables, systems analysis and design, software testing, training, adoption, and troubleshooting
- Ability to provide operational guidance and leadership to technical staff in area of specialty
- Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements and of the use of established care models in the development of education programs
- Proficiency in organizational change management and proven ability to proactively identify and solve problems
- Knowledge of healthcare regulations and standards, including HIPAA, CMS, and other relevant guidelines
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
- Ability to work evening or weekend hours, to support users and meet project deadlines or system upgrades
