POSITION SUMMARY:

Lifeguard Opener/Closer is responsible for opening and closing the pool/spa for use, after documenting the environment is safe and meets WAC requirements.  Also, the Lifeguard Opener/Closer is responsible for protecting the safety of patrons in and around the pool area by, preventing potential accidents by enforcing rules, maintaining a clean uncluttered pool area, and maintaining a chemically balanced pool. The Lifeguard Opener/Closer promotes the mission and goals of the YMCA and the Aquatic Department. We are looking to fill shifts from 4:15am to 8am, Monday-Friday.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Program
    1. Be on deck, supervising swimmers at all times when on duty, located to provide a response time not to exceed twenty seconds to all pool users. 
    2. Model safe, responsible, professional and appropriate behavior.
    3. Enforce all pool rules and follows said rules. 
    4. Respond to any accidents or incidents according to YMCA policy.
    5. Ensure equipment is used properly and for the appropriate events
    6. Learn and use members’ names.
    7. Provide a friendly and courteous environment for YMCA members and guests.
    8. Wear appropriate uniform with shirt, whistle, nametag, guard tube, and first aid fanny pack at all times.
    9. Proactive in facilitating all programs in a positive manner.
    10. Follow Lifeguard Sop’s.
  2. Supervision/Staff
    1. Ensure the safety of aquatic staff, members and member service staff by being alert, focused aware of environment at all times.
    2. Enforce and interpret rules and policy for the facility.
    3. Ensure proper opening and closing procedures are performed by all aquatics staff.
    4. Responding in a positive manner to member service inquiries.
  3. Facility
    1. Keep pool areas clean and uncluttered.
    2. Report any safety hazards to Aquatic Management. 
    3. Submit maintenance requests for repairs immediately.
    4. Perform chemical tests on all pools prior to opening/closing, make any chemical adjustments needed, address any minor mechanical issues.
    5. Address any WAC pool requirements and document prior to opening/closing the pools.
    6. Actively and timely communicate with facilities and maintenance regarding any incident, chemical imbalance and/or contaminant in pools.
  4. Administration
    1. Help maintain departmental records concerning pool operation and chemistry, as well as facility and equipment management. Maintain accurate records of all chemicals test results and bather load count sheets.
    2. Perform opening, pre shift checks as outlined on the Opening Pool Checksheet. 
    3. Report needs for supplies to Aquatic Management staff.
    4. Utilize the employee time system accurately and notify your supervisor if there are any problems.
  5. Association
    1. Obtain additional knowledge through attendance at workshops and trainings and keep certifications current.
    2. Obtain all required YMCA trainings within 45 days of hire.
    3. Dress according to YMCA Policy.
    4. Attend all department and branch staff meetings as scheduled.
    5. Assist with other Association projects and programs as needed.
  6. All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • To serve in this position, the incumbent is at least 18 years of age and has the appropriate education and employment experience to successfully manage areas of responsibility. 
  • Education experience includes current CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, AED, and a current YMCA or Red Cross Lifeguard certification and knowledge of applicable laws and codes affecting the pool operation and chemistry.
  • At least one-year Lifeguarding experience is preferred.
  • One-year basic pool water quality experience and basic pump room mechanical knowledge is preferred. 
  • A CPO certification is desirable or the ability to attain this within the first 2 years of employment is preferred.
  • This person needs to be able to utilize “critical thinking skills” at times to ready the pool for opening/closing when faced with problems “out of the ordinary”.  A high energy, early morning attitude with a smile is a must for this position. As an opener/closer this person must be on time, every time, able to make chemical adjustments as needed for the safe operation of our Aquatics Facility.

Upon hire:

  • South Sound YMCA’s - New Employee Orientation must be obtained within 45-days of hire.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside. This position will require traveling to different locations, leading group discussions in front of large groups, and working in an office that has constant interruptions. 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance, stoop, kneel, and talk and hear. Incumbent must be able to move freely and quickly throughout YMCA facilities and communicate effectively with people. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
