SUMMARY:
The Complex Safety Manager will provide Safety leadership and strategic direction by leading the complex in continuous safety improvement efforts. As an integral member of the Plant Management Team, the Complex Safety Manager will support and advise site management with regard to the Safety Management system. Formulate a proactive, local Safety strategy that drives the processing facility and live operations to become sustainable, healthy, and safe operationally. Participate in developing a vision for Safety, which includes continual enhancement of established programs and consistent implementation of new programs within a team environment.
The successful candidate will be involved in the effort to eliminate, prevent, or reduce the occurrence of safety, health, and medical issues. The candidate will also facilitate the development and maintenance of behaviors, attitudes, and a safety culture that supports the goals, behaviors, and actions of Tyson Foods. The Complex Safety Manager will act as a change agent to accelerate best practice sharing within the complex (both processing facility and live operations). Serve as the site's representative for Health and Safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct Safety Programs: Directs the safety programs for the site; recommends the design and implementation of new programs to minimize company losses due to accidents; measures effectiveness of programs.
- Compliance Leadership: Lead the compliance with OSHA regulations and OSHA/Tyson Foods Ergonomic program; inspect machinery, equipment, and working conditions to ensure compliance with OSHA; maintain OSHA file and support documents; accompany OSHA inspector on any complex inspections.
- Regular Inspections: Regularly inspects and reviews plant and live operations to assure compliance of all permits, operation, and equipment with state and federal regulations; reports any potential violations and recommends corrections as needed.
- Accident Analysis: Analyzes accident statistics to establish necessary precautions and changes needed for plant safety; communicates safety policy and procedure changes to management personnel.
- Policy Management: Responsible for ensuring that all health & safety policies, procedures, and practices are reviewed on an annual basis, or as changes and updates are required by practices or regulation, and are rolled-out in a timely manner.
- Field Audits: Conducts safety inspections and procedural audits in the field and have the skills, knowledge, and ability to take immediate corrective action if required.
- Training and Development: Reviews all safety areas to review policies, determine causes, identify corrective actions, and conducts training in areas such as ergonomics, emergency response team, lockout/tag out, hazard communication, and personal protective equipment.
- Incident Investigation: Investigates all safety-related incidents, reviews incident reports, and completes necessary reports for insurance carrier, risk management system, and corporate safety office.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Broad knowledge in general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelors degree or equivalent in an academic field directly related and essential to the position
Experience: 5+ years of experience with 3+ years progressive experience in general safety and in working with fire protection equipment, Hazmat Response, Department of Transportation; prior safety management experience
Computer Skills: Standard computer skills
Communication Skills: Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals; Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Special Skills: Strong knowledge of safety regulations (OSHA, hazard communications, ergonomics, accident investigation and safety training methods); Knowledgeable about industry best practice regarding safety and environmental approaches with PSM & RMP safety practices; Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations; Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables
Travel: Ability to travel up to 40%.
