POSITION SUMMARY
Resident Assistants (RAs) work to create and foster community within the residence halls and apartments. This environment should contribute to the intellectual, social, personal, and cultural development of residents, utilizing the Hawaiian value of “Aloha” as its focus. RAs understand and enforce University and Residential Life & Housing policies. RAs represent and bring awareness to the needs of residents to the administration. The Resident Assistant position is for a full academic year. The Resident Assistant reports directly to the Residence Hall Directors and the Director of Residence Life & Housing.
REPORTING
Direct Report to: Residence Hall Directors and Director of Residence Life & Housing
APPOINTMENT
- Resident Assistants must apply to the position each year
- An interview is required for hiring consideration
- If at any time a Resident Assistant is not meeting the requirements, they will meet with the Director and/or Assistant Director and the Resident Director and given a verbal & written warning
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Interpersonal Skills
- A positive attitude and willingness to work in the area of serving students
- Be available and accessible to students via in-person in the residence halls, at campus & RA programs, via duty phone, Remind app & other communication applications utilized by Residence Life & Housing
- Establish contact with every resident upon arrival and throughout the school year; in residence halls & elsewhere
- Perform peer counseling on personal, social, and academic concerns
- Able to refer students to the appropriate campus resources for support
- Respect and maintain confidentiality regarding student information and incidents
Community Engagement
- Encourage residents to attend campus activities
- Plan, implement, & facilitate programs for residents & residential community members from planning to follow-up
- Foster a supportive environment for recognizing individual residents' talents and differences
- Encourage students to seek out academic support when challenges or concerns arise
- Publicize & share information regarding campus and community events with residents via digital and physical bulletin boards updated monthly
- Serve as a positive role model for others & lead by example
Environmental
- Assist in maintaining a safe, clean, and comfortable living environment in the residence halls
- Notify residents of safety & well-being concerns via the REMIND app, bulletin boards & hall meetings
- Submit work orders to address facility concerns
- Report issues regarding safety: health, illness, injury, emergency, etc
- Assist in coordinating response procedures in emergency situations, (ex. fire drills)
- Address students with respect to common areas and noise levels on the floors
- Encourage students to respect the rights of others and act responsibly
- Explain and carry out University and Residential Life & Housing policies
- Initiate, meet, and conduct procedures for violations of policies
- Perform Monthly Health, Safety & Maintenance inspections with RA partners on the or around the 15th
Administrative Duties
- Arrive and participate in RA training before New Student Fall Orientation and Spring Orientation
- Complete RA duties post graduation (includes check-out procedures, rounds, incident report entry, etc.)
- Assume duty responsibilities when on call in the evenings on weekdays (8:00 pm to 8:00 am) and full-day duty on the weekends
- RAs must be PHYSICALLY PRESENT and communicate with the Resident Director on duty at the start of duty rounds
- Assist in the opening and closing of the residence halls at vacation periods and at the beginning and end of each term. MUST SUBMIT ALL REPORTS, KEYS, & ASSOCIATED ITEMS PRIOR TO DEPARTING CAMPUS AT THE END OF EACH TERM
- Attend weekly staff meetings, Residence Life Staff Training and Education, and attend staff development sessions
- Assist in maintaining a safe, clean, & comfortable work environment when working in the office
- Maintain communication and positive working relationships with Residence Life & Housing staff
- Respond to resident concerns & record as needed in the EzResLife system and/or Maxient student conduct system
- Be present on campus for duty rounds during break (Spring Break)
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Be at least a full-time sophomore when beginning the position
- Maintain a minimum of a 2.8/4.0 cumulative grade point average
- Enrolled at Chaminade University of Honolulu and maintain a minimum of 12 credits
- Be in good judicial and financial standing with Chaminade University of Honolulu
(RA may not continue in the position if placed on disciplinary or academic probation or if subject to suspension)
- Hold no more than 1 other on or off-campus job
- Not hold the position of President or Vice-President of CSGA or RHA
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Experience in customer service and hospitality
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft programs
- Experience working in an office & team environment
- Have no conflicting schedules with internships, classes, work, or clubs
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Duties involve work in an office and community setting
- Requires physical effort with intermittent sitting, standing, climbing stairs, and walking up inclines
- Must be able to lift 20 pounds, walk the campus with ease, and have excellent motor skills
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor
- Observes all safety and health regulations and works in accordance with safe work procedures and policies of the University.
- Reports unsafe acts/conditions and injuries in a timely and proper manner
- Educate & demonstrate basic life skills for residents
