Job Summary:

  • Manages and leads Lab team in achievement of day-to day objectives and workflows.
  • Identifies and challenges work processes with an eye toward continuous improvements.
  • Presents age-related reference ranges and consultation/needs when instructing or reporting to others on specific techniques or test results.
  • Serves as a resource to staff for day to day operations of the department. Exhibits sound judgment. Trouble shoots and problem solves effectively.
  • Keeps all pertinent others informed of relevant activities and developments related to their area of responsibility.
  • Is aware of problems that could interfere with optimum unit functioning and promotes definition and discussion of solution to these problems.
  • Promotes teamwork by use of effective skills to elicit trust relationships with others.
  • Assists to determine need for new departmental policies, procedures and processes and participates in their development. Actively assists with implementation of new programs.
  • Deals uniformly with employees, maintaining an atmosphere of fairness and impartiality. Effectively provides counseling/discipline when required.
  • Leads selection and orientation of new staff. Identifies training needs and facilitates planning. Serves as preceptor to new staff and students. Shows ability to thoroughly interview applicants following legal interview guidelines.
  • Monitors staff performance and learning needs and provides feedback, counseling and instruction as appropriate. Performance appraisals are completed in a timely manner.
  • Develops and maintains staffing schedules in a timely and accurate manner. Makes appropriate day to day staffing adjustments.
  • Maintains and exhibits an adequate working knowledge of pertinent labor contracts.
  • Creatively and competently carries out assignments/projects. Completes them in a timely manner with all pertinent follow-up.
  • Uses electronic communications which are technology appropriate and effective.
  • Participates in professional goal setting, solicits feedback, evaluates own strengths and weaknesses.
  • Submits requested budget related information in a timely and accurate manner to the lab manager and assists staff with cost containment issues.
  • Accurately completes timecards in a timely manner in the absence of the lab manager.
  • Assists to prepare department for successful surveys by applicable regulatory and accrediting bodies.
  • Consistently and accurately oversees POCT quality and competencies data.
  • Develops and oversees POCT policy and procedures in collaboration with the Laboratory manager.
  • Accepts responsibility, accountability and authority as a unit manager on a 24-hour basis.
  • Responsible for overseeing the daily operations and staff of the ED.
  • Ensures high-quality patient care.
  • Coordinates with the multidisciplinary team to maintain functional clinical pathways.

Qualifications:

  • MLS(ASCP), MT(ASCP) or equivalent training meeting CLIA requirements as a general supervisor for moderate and high complexity laboratories.
  • Five years experience in all phases of laboratory medicine. Preferred one year of laboratory supervising experience. Preferred one year of POCT experience
  • Laboratory technologist testing skills.
  • High level of written and verbal communication skills.
  • Conflict resolution.
  • Understanding of applicable government regulations and The Joint Commission Standards.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities; good communication skills, ability to inspire confidence in others.
  • Ability to plan, implement and evaluate change, commitment to promoting growth of others.
