SUMMARY: Operates equipment used in spraying noxious weeds and brush. Handles, sells, and mixes chemicals used to control noxious weeds under the direction of the Noxious Weed Supervisor. Operates under the Noxious Weed Supervisor’s license. 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties will be assigned.

Operate a 1-ton truck, weed sprayer, truck with trailer and related equipment to assist in the control of noxious weeds and household hazardous waste collection, storage and disposal. 

Must be able to drive 4-wheel all terrain vehicle, a pickup and single axle truck.

Operate tractor, loader, skid steer, and mower.

Under the direct supervision of the supervisor, sprays infected areas with chemical solutions. 

Prepare solutions required to eradicate noxious weeds.

Attend Hazwoper class to attain certification.

Assist in the removal of vegetation, tree, and brush.

Load and unload equipment and material from trucks.

Perform minor repairs on equipment.

Use hand tools such as hammer, shovel, rake, chain saw, or other tools used to maintain right-of-way.

Assist with all in-county and out-of-county household hazardous waste tasks.

When not engaged in duties pertaining to noxious weeds or household hazardous waste tasks, will be assigned to work on other Public Works Department duties under the direction of the Road Supervisor.


QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High School diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 


LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to effectively present information one-on-one and in small group situations. 


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.


REASONING ABILITY:  Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.


FINANCIAL ACCOUNTABILITY:

Employee is responsible for making purchases in accordance with Montgomery County’s Procurement Policy with prior approval from the Supervisor.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must possess a valid driver’s license. For Household Hazardous Waste must attend Hazwoper class and receive a certificate within the first year. Must be willing to attend other training classes as required.


OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Must be able to talk with the public and discuss their concerns in a professional manner.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and taste or smell. The employee will be required to climb on to or in equipment or trucks.

The employee must frequently lift and/or walk considerable distances over rough ground while carrying up to 50 pounds and occasionally stoop and lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. This position involves working in confined areas with chemicals as well as exposure to extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. 


ADVANCEMENT OPPORTUNITY: In order to advance from the position of Noxious Weed Equipment Operator I to Noxious Weed Equipment Operator II, certain conditions must be met:

- Minimum of 1 years’ experience in current position as a NW/HHW Operator I

- Have a Class B CDL with Tanker Endorsement

- Satisfactory training in the essential duties of an Operator II (satisfactory training to be confirmed by the Noxious Weed Supervisor and approved by the Public Works Coordinator)
