POSITION SUMMARY

 

The Greater Birmingham Humane Society (“the GBHS”) is a progressive animal welfare shelter whose mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome homeless, abused, neglected and abandoned animals. We are committed to an open admissions policy, animal rehabilitation and a low euthanasia rate. GBHS’ open intake and adoption philosophy is a key part of our progressive mission, enabling us to save and rehome thousands of animals each year.

PRIMARY RELATIONSHIPS

The Clinic Manager:

  • Reports to the Director of Clinical Services and serves as a member of the clinic team.
  • Interacts daily with veterinarians, veterinary assistants at all locations, Critical Care Center Manager, operations and administrative staff, veterinary student externs, volunteers, the general public, and potential adopters.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage clinic department and clinic staff
  • Coordinate and direct the workflow of clinic staff 
  • Create work schedules for staff and process leave requests
  • Assures that personnel are properly trained for their position and provide coaching skills to those struggling
  • Follow and contribute to the development of the highest standards of animal care 
  • Conduct quarterly department meetings
  • Provide supervisor with weekly reports on clinic operations 
  • Must handle, restrain, and triage all animals entering the shelter 
  • Implement and follow all medical and cleaning protocols 
  • Humanely handles and kennels all animals and ensures the identification of all shelter animals with appropriate tags or bands before kenneling
  • Provides care for the animals by helping clinic staff with cleaning their cage or kennel in a thorough and sanitary manner to prevent the spread of any infectious diseases
  • Maintains the highest standards of cleanliness maintaining disease prevention
  • Follow protocols in the event of contagious illness 
  • Provides care for the animals by feeding each animal in accordance with their dietary requirements and posted feeding procedures
  • Develops a general knowledge of animals’ behaviors, temperaments and personality traits
  • Oversees daily observations of medical and behavioral issues of animals in our care by paying careful attention for signs of sickness, stress, aggressive behavior, and/or injury; Reports findings to supervisor and medical staff
  • Maintains records properly and timely, DEA logs, and statistics as required by law
  • Responsible for proper record documentation, input and filing
  • Conducts and assists with humane euthanasia
  • Responsible for implementing euthanasia policy and protocol
  • Checks and maintains cleaning supplies and equipment
  • Communicates inventory and supply needs as well as maintenance issues to supervisor
  • Keep all drug, vaccines, and medical supplies accounted for in appropriate locations
  • Oversees and assists with the medication and medical treatment of animals as prescribed by the veterinarian as requested
  • Oversee the preparation of animals for surgery and routinely inspect and clean all incisions when necessary
  • Oversee preparation of animals for adoption regarding health exams and inoculations
  • Oversee the medical treatment of illness throughout the shelter
  • Consistently strives to keep abreast of the field and animal welfare issues, techniques, procedures and equipment
  • Maintain awareness of industry standards and innovations through publications, attendance of seminars and webinars
  • Maintains a high level of communication with all GBHS staff, Volunteers, and Fosters
  • Oversees and coordinates with the Foster Care Coordinator
  • Coordinate with all departments for the betterment of the animals 
  • Works collaboratively with supervisor and clinic staff to determine if animals are appropriate for adoption
  • Assure that the mission of GBHS is implemented by staff and projected to the public
  • Communicate with courtesy and professionalism with the public
  • Assist with pet intakes and coordinates with Community Outreach Coordinator 
  • Maintain a positive working relation with the staff and veterinarians 
  • Represents the GBHS in a professional manner in all situations
  • Performs other duties as required by immediate supervisor


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two years or more managing 3+ employees
  • General knowledge of Pharmaceutical medications
  • General knowledge of Veterinary terminology 
  • Experience in animal handling and phlebotomy 
  • Certified Euthanasia Technician 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A passion for the mission of GBHS and a sense of humor are required
  • Two years or more working under a Veterinarian as a Veterinary Technician (LVT preferred, unlicensed considered)
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Ability to perform physical work involving standing for long periods, carrying animal crates, bending, scrubbing, mopping, walking quickly, reaching, squatting, and lifting up to 75 pounds with reasonable accommodation
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • A positive attitude and ability to get along with others
  • Knowledge of animal handling and communication preferred
  • Experience working in a kennel environment preferred

 

WORK CONDITIONS

This work is performed in a high noise level area. Exposure to industrial cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, animal feces, zoonotic (human to animal) diseases, bites and scratches. Weekend shifts may be required. Safety procedures must be adhered to at all times.
