Hiring Range: $38,236 - $47,795
Job Summary
Under supervision of the Recreation Superintendent, Program Managers, and/or Park Maintenance Crew Leader, provides responsible professional assistance to the Parks and Recreation Department in planning, organizing, coordinating, supervising and/or delivering a variety of recreational activities throughout the program division and assists with park and field maintenance team as needed.
Essential Duties
(Any one position may not include all of the tasks listed, nor do the examples necessarily include all of the tasks performed.)
- Administer the facility reservations for athletic facilities including scheduling reservations of field and/or court space, determining field preparation needs, developing facility reservation reports for operations staff to prepare fields, scheduling field lights and restroom opening and closings, and determining cancellations and the notification to field users due to inclement weather or other unforeseen conditions.
- Provides significant assistance to the special event program manager for large-scale signature events. Will also be assigned as lead on smaller special events with oversight from events program managers.
- Provides significant assistance to the athletics program manager for large-scale athletic programs. Will also be assigned as lead on smaller athletic programs with oversight from the athletics program manager.
- Provides significant assistance to the recreation center program manager for large-scale recreation center programs. Will also be assigned as lead on smaller recreation center programs with oversight from the recreation center program manager.
- Assists the Department with marketing via traditional media outlets and social media, webpage updates, and program flyers or brochures.
- Provides quality and timely customer service for facility reservations and program registration.
- Procures equipment and materials in accordance with North Carolina General Statutes and Town policy.
- Provides general oversight of part-time staff directing staff on appropriate work tasks when program managers are not on site.
- Assists park maintenance team with athletic facility preparation, routine maintenance, and special projects as needed.
- Assists with other departmental activities as needed. Assists in the preparation of regular and special reports as needed.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of principles, practices and methods of parks and recreation programs.
- General knowledge of current literature, trends and developments in the field of parks and recreation programming.
- Knowledge of standard resources, materials and facilities utilized in a public recreational program.
- Ability to plan, execute, over-see and deliver a variety of year-round parks and recreation programs and activities.
- Ability to plan and coordinate the work of contract programmers and of temporary, volunteer or paid workers.
- Excellent organizational and prioritization skills.
- Ability to express ideas effectively and communicate effectively in verbal and written forms.
- Knowledge of routine maintenance tasks necessary to operate facilities in a safe and effective manner.
- Ability to deal tactfully with staff, contractors and the public. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials, citizens, employees, contractors, supervisors, participants and other agencies.
- Adept in use of computer and web-based programs such as Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint), Adobe, photo editing, online registration programs, web page design/maintenance, and social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc).
Education and Experience
Graduate with a four-year degree in parks and recreation, physical education or related field from an accredited college. Four years of progressive park and recreation work experience will also be considered in-lieu of a college degree. Experience includes a general understanding of parks and recreation administration.
Equipment Operated
Personal computer, A/V equipment, printer, calculator, copy machine, telephone equipment, other office equipment, power tools, UTV, truck, trailer, athletic field equipment, and other hand tools.
Special Requirements
Ability to maintain a valid driver’s license.
Working Conditions: Requirements and Demands
Due to the nature of the position requires a flexible schedule to provide program participant customer service during peak seasons. Includes weekend, evening and holiday work as assigned. Both office and outdoor working conditions are required.
Physical Requirements
- Stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing and repetitive motions in a variety of weather conditions and includes some personal safety hazards.
- Must be able to lift and move heavy objects with proper technique.
- Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data, operate a computer terminal, utilize measuring devices, operate a motor vehicle and inspect work of others.
