This position works in the Facilities Management Plumbing organizational unit. This is skilled plumbing work at a journeyperson level. An employee of this class exercises considerable independent judgment in dealing with technical work problems involving the maintenance, repair and installation of plumbing, irrigation, watermain and sanitary systems throughout City facilities and may supervise the work of one or more subordinates engaged in less skilled tasks. In addition, the successful candidate performs minor maintenance and repair tasks on heating equipment. An incumbent is subject to call at any time for emergency response reasons. The work of this class is distinguished from lower level classes by the more advanced nature of the duties, the wider latitude in the use of independent judgement and by entailed supervisory responsibility. An incumbent exercises considerable independent judgement and action in completing most assignments in accordance with established trade practices. Oral and written assignments, often accompanied by sketches, layouts and blueprints are received from a superior who reviews work performance in terms of effective trades work, conformance with established standards and the attainment of desired objectives. The installation work is inspected by a City Plumbing Inspector as required. Performs related work as required.
Qualifications include completion of Grade 12 supplemented by the completion of a recognized Trade Certificate of Qualification plus considerable general experience at the Journeyperson level; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
· Thorough knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the plumbing trade.
· Considerable knowledge of hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
· Considerable knowledge of the City Plumbing regulations and standards.
· Ability to work from blueprints, sketches, rough drafts and to follow oral and written instructions.
· Ability to assign and supervise the work of one or more individuals engaged in less complex plumbing tasks.
· Ability to maintain simple records, estimate materials required and requisition parts and materials as required; and use innovative techniques, best practices and materials to improve quality and workmanship, reduce costs and minimize life cycle costs.
A Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia, British Columbia Class B Level Gas Fitters Licence, and BCWWA Cross Connection Certificate are required.
