We currently have one vacancy in our Water Division. We are looking for a career-minded individual who is motivated to take care of the public infrastructure and the safety of all who use it. Work is performed cooperatively and in a manner that ensures individual, team and public safety.

Water Division:
The successful candidate in this position will maintain, install, and repair drinking water infrastructure including: water mains, reservoirs, pump stations, fire hydrants, valves, water meters, service lines, and more using high quality tools and equipment. Position Duties
- Provides guidance and training to less experienced workers; may serve as crew leader on a small crew.
- Uses a variety of hand and power-operated tools and equipment such as shovels, picks, hand and small riding mowers, tapping machine, power hacksaw, pipe threading machine, drills, jackhammer, gas-powered leaf sweeper, welders, compressor, and portable concrete saw.
- Performs assigned work to install or repair main water and sewer lines, manholes and catch basins.
- Proficiently operates all departmental heavy equipment, including backhoe, loaders, dump truck, paver, roller, mower, grader, jet truck, hydro-excavator, snowplow, and sander trucks.
- Maintains deep-well pump station equipment and facilities, disassembles pumps, removes and replaces well pipe; replaces seals, bearings, impellers, shafts, and related parts necessary to return equipment to serviceable condition.
- Makes service connections to water mains using special tapping equipment to install valves, lateral water lines, blowoffs, hydrants and meters.
- Lays and aligns pipe, backfills excavations, flushes and tests installations in accordance with established procedures.
- Takes readings on water meters; repairs meters as necessary.
- Overhauls and repair of fire hydrants; shuts off main line or hydrant foot valves. Disassembles and cleans hydrant subsections; replaces gaskets, seals and seats; reassembles, installs, and tests hydrant for proper operation.
- Performs basic carpentry and cement work, oxyacetylene cutting and burning, and painting as necessary to accomplish primary activities.
- Operates trucks in picking up and delivering materials and supplies and to collect and remove debris from different locations.
- Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner, provides information within scope of knowledge, or refers to employee of higher classification.
- Performs the handling and/or application of hazardous materials in accordance with state regulations.
Minimum Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
High School diploma, or G.E.D., and four years’ experience in water construction and maintenance or related work; or any combination of education and experience, which would provide the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge, and ability required performing the job.
Passing a background check and comprehensive physical exam are required prior to hire.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION
- Valid Washington State Driver's License with driving record free of serious or frequent violations. CDL with a Class 'A' endorsement or the ability to obtain this certification within six months of hire. A driving abstract will be requested for applicants who pass first review and required prior to interviewing.
- Valid Water Distribution Manager I certificate or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
- Valid Flagger certificate and CPR certification, or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
- Cross-Connection Specialist certification preferred
Other Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Knowledge of maintenance equipment, construction, and repair methods and procedures for streets, water and sewer lines, catch basins, pumping stations and related facilities.
- Knowledge of safety standards and precautions related to the work as prescribed by WISHA.
- Ability to use the mechanical tools of the trade.
- Ability to read, write, and comprehend the English language.
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral directions.
- Ability to work cooperatively in a work crew.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor in all weather conditions, and in dirty, uncomfortable conditions.
- Ability to sustain continuous physical effort including frequent bending, walking, manipulation of, and heavy lifting of departmental equipment.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
- Skill in using the hand tools and equipment of the laboring trade.
- Ability to proficiently operate equipment such as backhoes, front end loader, street sweeper, dump truck, and other more complex equipment.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability and willingness to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed primarily outdoors in all kinds of weather exposing the employee to inclement weather and hazards related to working with and around a variety of equipment, working in confined spaces, bending, twisting, kneeling, crawling, lifting of heavy objects, exercising physical exertion in performing heavy manual labor, and dangers related to the digging up and repairing water and sewer lines.
