The Outdoor Program Manager contributes to the membership engagement and retention of girls at Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts (GSEMA) by providing high impact program opportunities for girls to grow and develop beyond the troop experience. The Outdoor Program Manager is responsible for the development and delivery of level appropriate and inclusive curriculum that supports the Girl Leadership Outcomes and the Girl Scout National Program Portfolio.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and manage an outdoor program portfolio with curriculum that is age/Girl Scout level appropriate, inclusive, outcome-based and increases girls’ outdoor experiences and capabilities.
- Ensure that all programs and activities are consistent with GSUSA guidelines, GSUSA health and safety standards, and local, state, and federal laws
- Design girl programs and activities that are cost effective, aligned with annual budget and maximizes use of council and partner resources.
- Manage and provide supervision for part-time outdoor facilitators and camp staff.
- Project manage and lead outdoor programs and events as assigned.
- Serve as a council trainer for volunteers and staff on camping and outdoor activities, outdoor adventure program activities, and First Aid and CPR.
- Create a program environment that it welcoming, inclusive and culturally responsive.
- Provide superior client service to all campers, parents/families, staff, volunteers and vendors.
- Support the camp directors with the operation of camp; units, program, business, camper and staff supervision, and health care.
- Together with Human Resources and/or the Outdoor Program management team, recruit, screen, hire, train, and supervise part-time staff, seasonal staff, and/or volunteers to implement camp and/or outdoor programming on council-owned properties, ensuring that each staff member complies with GSUSA, American Camp Association (ACA), Massachusetts (MA) regulations and council guidelines.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in education or related field preferred.
- Two years minimum experience in teaching, developing, conducting and/or supervising innovative youth outdoor education programs and support systems required. Additional years of experience highly preferred.
- Experience with challenge courses is required. Having a level 2 ropes certification is highly desirable.
- Bilingual skill is desirable.
- Outdoor camp experience is required.
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office software; adept at utilizing social networking; experience using Salesforce or demonstrated ability to learn and become proficient with new technology preferred.
- Strong public relations skills and ability to develop community collaborations; able to relate well to both adults and children required.
- Ability to clearly & concisely communicate verbally and in writing required.
- Capacity to, independently and as part of a team, plan, organize and prioritize work, while managing multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment is required.
- Ability to effectively identify, analyze and solve practical problems and successfully manage a variety of variables and personalities; ability to adapt in a changing environment.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, and be willing to travel throughout the council service area.
- Upon hire, will need to successfully get a Girl Scout membership.
Work Environment:
- This is a hybrid position with work from home, in communities served, and at designated GSEMA offices or properties as needed. Office location can be Waltham or Middleboro, Ma.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to lift and manipulate up to 30 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- May involve prolonged periods of sitting or working on a computer.
Travel Requirements:
Must have access to reliable transportation to travel to GSEMA offices/service centers and across the Council service area as needed. As this position requires approximately 50% travel within service area and may require occasional travel outside the service area, possession of a valid driver’s license and access to motor vehicle is preferred.
