About the Department

Alabama State University, Office of Financial Aid, invites applications to the fill the position of Default Prevention & Financial Literacy Coordinator.  Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Financial Aid, the Default Prevention & Financial Literacy Coordinator will independently administer the borrower delinquency and default prevention/management program for the university. The Coordinator will be responsible for the efficient delivery of all student loan default prevent outreach efforts by providing critical and direct oversight. This position will manage the following: default prevention workshops; entrance and exit counseling; while providing quality customer service to all students and their families and will be responsible for the implementation of default prevention initiatives including working with students to prevent student loan delinquency and default, discussing comprehensive repayment options, and increasing financial awareness and wellness.  Also, the Coordinator will independently manage the Financial Literacy program to assist delinquent Federal Loan borrowers with a special emphasis on Cohort Default.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for monitoring default prevention efforts for the university; track withdrawal and graduation dates for current borrowers in order to fulfill exit counseling requirements
  • Communicate effectively and on a timely basis with student borrowers, lender services and guarantee agencies concerning application status, enrollment status, and default aversion information
  • Assist with workshops and presentations to include financial literacy, entrance and exit counseling, and other outreach activities
  • Provide information to current and prospective student borrowers on all aspects of the financial aid process 
  • Attend financial aid training and workshops to keep abreast of changes in federal law and procedures 
  • Assist in implementation of changes in loan policies per federal regulations
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university and three years’ experience in student services programs, which should include working with federal title IV aid programs and collections, are required. Candidates with prior experience in student loan default management within federal and state student financial aid programs including knowledge of U.S. Department of Education rules and regulations and/or knowledge and understanding of cohort default rate management and student loan repayment options are highly desirable.

  • Strong Organizational, accounting, and analytical skills
  • Knowledge of applicable financial aid federal and state statutes and regulations governing assistance programs
  • Strong computer and technology skills and knowledge of financial aid software applications
  • Ability to identify challenges and implement solutions
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of Title IV program fund regulations
