About the Department

JOB GOAL
The College Attorney provides legal services college-wide as assigned by the President and provides support to the Legal Affairs and Government Relations department.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

These requirements are a representation of the types of duties and responsibilities that will be required of positions given this title and shall not be construed as an exhaustive list of specific duties and responsibilities. Management may direct employees to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

  1. Reviews and prepares appropriate responses to items and issues within the College that have legal ramifications.
  2. Represents the College in the adjudication of legal matters.
  3. Perform legal audits, when necessary, at the direction of the President.
  4. Reviews federal and state laws, rules and guidelines, and other policies which may affect the operation of the College and works with appropriate College administrators to ensure College compliance.
  5. Manages updates, edits, and ensures continued legal compliance of all District Board of Trustees Rules and Internal Management Memoranda (IMM).
  6. Provides legal advice and guidance to Human Resources in related matters, including hiring practices, discipline, unemployment compensation, employee/applicant grievances (internal and external) and provides interpretations of criminal background/credit/licensing verification responses as requested.
  7. Oversees negotiation of contracts and prepares contracts when appropriate.
  8. Works with appropriate staff to resolve contract disputes. Provides interpretations of contract terms, as necessary.
  9. Collaborates with appropriate administrators regarding organizational structure, appropriate policies, processes, and guidelines.
  10. Gathers information and responds to public records requests, subpoenas, court papers, and other legal actions.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

   

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICATIONS

  • J.D. or LL.B. from an ABA/AALS accredited law school

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
  • Excellent analytical, organization, and oral and written communication skills
  • Proactive problem-solving skills
  • Ability to easily navigate common computer software (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Ability to travel as required  

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS
  • Florida Bar License in good status.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Paralegal


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in governmental relations
  • Knowledge of law pertaining to educational institutions, especially in the areas of public agency contracts, non- profit corporation law, employment law, student rights, and administrative law
