Goodwyn Mills Cawood (GMC) is one of the largest privately held architecture and engineering firms in the Southeast, with offices located throughout Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee.

GMC has an opening for Environmental Scientist III in Nashville, TN to support on-going projects. This comes with a variety of responsibilities including managing biological resources-related projects, preparing technical reports and plans in accordance with agency requirements, and assisting the biological resources team during environmental reviews of projects by the appropriate jurisdictional agencies. This position is responsible for leading complex environmental projects including data collection, interpretation, and reporting to inform policy and operational decisions. The role requires collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to develop innovative solutions that address environmental challenges such as pollution control, natural resource management, and ecosystem restoration.

Essential functions and responsibilities include:

  • Support resource agency consultation and permitting, client coordination, proposal preparation, and related marketing support
  • Conduct biological/ecological field assessments and data collection to include wetland delineations, stream determinations, flora and faunal surveys (including threatened and endangered species), natural resource permitting, and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) review process, documentation, and compliance.
  • Strong, working knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental regulations and permitting processes
  • Specific applied knowledge should includestrong botanical, wetland, or wildlife technical expertise, regulatory permitting, project management.
  • Effective and professional coordination with clients, resource agencies, colleagues, and support staff.
  • Coordinating with construction contractors, project managers, and resource specialists
  • Other activities, as directed by your supervisor

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor in Biology, Ecology, Forestry, Wildlife Biology, Geology, or related field.
  • 5-8 Years of experience
  • Physically able to perform demanding field work, often in unfavorable conditions (inclement weather, intense heat or cold, biting insects, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear, concise, and comprehensive technical reports.
  • Experience with Tennessee Hydrologic Determinations (HDs) and/or US Army Corp of Engineers Wetland Delineation methods.
  • Experience with environmental permitting and natural resource assessment methodologies such as the Tennessee Stream Quantification Tool (TN SQT) and the Tennessee Rapid Assessment Method for Wetlands
  • Experience with using GPS/GIS technology to collect biological survey data, map vegetation communities, and/or delineate jurisdictional waters.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in managing large-scale environmental projects and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Working knowledge and demonstrated experience with NEPA process documentation and compliance for transportation-based projects and/or other federal agencies.
  • Holds Tennessee Hydrologic Professional (QHP) and/or Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) certification.
  • Familiarity with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) environmental risk assessment and remediation technologies.
  • Experience working with environmental policy development or advocacy organizations.

Field Work and Travel requirements:

  • 25% Field Work / 75% Office Work
  • Overnight travel may be required multiple days during the calendar year.
