About the Department

General Statement of Responsibilities
Serves as the lead instructor for Emergency Services courses, with a primary focus on Paramedic and EMT instruction. Individuals with qualifications in Fire Science education may also integrate related content into their teaching responsibilities. They are responsible for planning, delivering, and assessing learning experiences for students enrolled in Emergency Services Courses.

Engages in a full range of professional and institutional activities, including student advising, curriculum development, professional development, participation in departmental and college-wide meetings, committee service, and community outreach.

Supervision Received
The dean, in consultation with the department head, is responsible for carrying out the evaluation of instructors under procedures developed by the vice president.

Position Duties

  1. Teaches a variety of EMS courses and workshops, and Fire Science Courses if qualified.
  2. Advises Emergency Services students on matters of program goals and course requirements, scheduling office hours as needed.
  3. Prepares and appropriately utilizes EMS instructional support materials, including course syllabi, supplemental materials, and instructional media.
  4. Coordinates Emergency Services lab or clinical activities.
  5. Works in cooperation with other department members for clinical, lab, and course activities.
  6. Uses appropriate assessment strategies and instruments related to course objectives and identified outcomes of the EMS program and implements changes to the program as needed.
  7. Prepares and maintains course documentation required by the Oregon Health Authority.
  8. Participates in Emergency Services Department program meetings and planning activities.
  9. Participates in college-wide and EMS curriculum planning and development as needed.
  10. Serves as a member of college-wide standing committees, screening committees, and other related activities.
  11. Engages in professional growth activity based on objectives established in an approved annual professional growth plan.
  12. Represents the Emergency Services Department and the College to the community, businesses, public agencies, and other organizations in a professional manner.
  13. Assists in maintaining departmental equipment, participates in periodic inventory, and provides for the security of facilities and instructional materials.
  14. Ensures that appropriate training is provided to all clinical and field internship preceptors.
  15. Works cooperatively with the program Medical Director.
  16. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: An associate's degree in Paramedicine, Emergency Services, or a closely related field is required; a bachelor's or master's degree preferred
Only degrees received from an accredited institution will be accepted:  accreditation must be recognized by the office of degree authorization, US Department of Education, as required by ORS 348.609.  Final candidate will be required to provide official transcripts for required degree.

Licenses and Certificates: Oregon licensure as a Paramedic; good standing with the Oregon Health Authority or ability to obtain such by date of hire; current ACLS Instructor certificate from American Heart Association or equivalent certificate approved by the Oregon Health Authority or ability to obtain within six months of hire; possession of a BTLS or PHTLS and PALS Instructor certificate or equivalent certification approved by the Oregon Health Authority or ability to obtain within six months of hire; and completion of an approved instructor development program mandated by the Oregon Health Authority or ability to obtain within one month of hire. For assignments requiring operation of a motor vehicle, possession of a valid Oregon Driver’s License and proof of an acceptable driving record are required. New employees establishing resident status in the State of Oregon must obtain an Oregon driver’s license within 30 days (ORS 807.020 (1)).

Experience: Five years of full-time pre-hospital experience as a paramedic required; three years of full-time, one year of teaching Paramedic and/or related courses, and coordinating the delivery of instructional services and teaching adult learners required. Teaching in a community college setting is preferred.

Knowledge of:  Extensive knowledge of the following: the subject area to be taught; computer applications for communication and learning, including, but not limited to, word processing, networks, the internet, spreadsheets, and multi-media presentations; curriculum development; outcomes development and measurement; the contemporary community college mission, its role in higher education, and its diverse student population; the role of accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act; and different pedagogical methods, including lecture, group activity, discussion, online and individual instruction to accommodate a variety of learning styles.

Ability to:  Communicate effectively and respectfully with colleagues and students from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds; participate as a professional in achieving the mission and goals of the College and of the Emergency Services programs; demonstrate a dynamic and interactive approach to teaching and resolving issues related to EMS education; demonstrate commitment to the development of EMS education, the preparation of students seeking EMS careers, and support of continuing education activities; participate in curriculum and program development; participate in the student advising program and college-wide efforts to improve student retention and success; demonstrate experience or potential for innovation and creativity in both the classroom and related educational duties, including the use of new technologies such as online instruction; demonstrate a commitment to professional standards and growth. Manual dexterity and coordination are required for more than half of the daily work period (about 60%). While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach, bend, kneel, stoop, twist, crouch, climb, balance, see, talk, hear, and manipulate objects. The position requires some mobility including the ability to move materials weighing up to 35 pounds on a regular basis. On feet 90% of time. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 50% of the work period while utilizing equipment. This position requires both verbal and written communication abilities.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is primarily working indoors in a lab/classroom environment or doing outdoor lab exercises on/around fire/EMS apparatus in on or off-campus environments. The noise level in the work environment is typical to most lab/classroom environments with some prolonged exposure to loud fire apparatus and equipment. Other background noises and lighting conditions vary.

Other Qualifications

This is a Fixed-Term Full-Time Faculty position (100%, 10 months/year) in the Emergency Services DepartmentPosition is fixed-term through 6/30/2027renewed annually, with continuation dependent upon funding. Fixed-term positions do not accrue seniority. Starting compensation will be in accordance with initial step placement per the current Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and the 2025-26 Full-Time Faculty salary schedule. Consideration will be given to experience and educational achievement.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness
Rogue Community College is considered a qualifying public employer for the purposes of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. Through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, full-time employees working at the College may qualify for forgiveness of the remaining balance on Direct Loans after 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan.
