The New York Public Library (NYPL) is seeking an enthusiastic candidate to fill the role of Community Outreach Impact Associate. The Community Outreach Impact Associate must be prepared to travel across the city (including Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island) to build awareness of the NYPL’s programs and services. This is a hands-on, active role that requires in-person communication and engagement at a wide range of indoor and outdoor environments including city shelters and other housing facilities, community events, festivals and street fairs, and in public spaces such as parks, community gardens, and markets. This position is an integral part of NYPL’s commitment to ensure underserved communities are connected with the Library and have awareness of relevant programs and services.
This is a grant-funded position funded through June 30, 2026.
Reporting to the Outreach Coordinator, this person will:
- Attend and undertake a range of outreach activities at a wide range of year-round community events and festivals in the Bronx, Manhattan and Staten Island
- Undertake a range of outreach activities at NYPL library locations, community organizations, and in public settings (both indoors and outdoors) such as public housing, city shelters, parks, shopping malls, and recreation centers
- Assist with maintaining a list of community programs and services to actively refer Library patrons to relevant Library programs, community organizations, and service providers
- Plan, set-up equipment, and attend scheduled outreach events
- Provide clear information about NYPL services and programs in in-person and online settings
- Provide administrative support for NYPL community outreach initiatives; collect data and assist with preparing impact reports on key events and monthly activities
- Maintain up-to-date stakeholder contact information and help identify new opportunities for community outreach
- Collaborate with partners across NYPL including the central programming and outreach teams, branch staff, and central services teams, including Branch Programs and Services, BookOps, Communication, and Facilities
- Perform related duties and work on special projects as required
Required Education, Experience & Skills
- Associate’s Degree required
- 1-2 years of work experience in customer service and/or community outreach
- Experience working with diverse communities and people from underserved neighborhoods
- Conversational fluency in at least one of the following languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Ukrainian, Wolof
- Passionate about learning and helping others to learn
- Excellent community outreach and engagement skills
- Excellent organizational skills
- Interpersonal skills, including the ability to get along with people of diverse backgrounds and to make people feel welcome and included
- Ability to work on multiple teams and be a team player
- Ability to use and learn technology efficiently
- Demonstrated ability to work well in a team atmosphere and independently under minimal supervision
- Excellent detail management and organization skills
- Flexibility and willingness to travel within the NYC Metro area
