About the Department
The Public Works Maintenance I - Streets position performs maintenance and repair of City of Chaska streets, public properties, parks, and recreation areas. Duties include operating heavy and light equipment to maintain roadways, school athletic fields, the City cemetery, municipal parks, trails, and green spaces.
This position primarily works within the Streets division, but may also assist other Public Works divisions as needed.
Position Duties
1. Grounds & Facility Maintenance
- Performs routine maintenance of City parks, cemetery, school athletic fields, playgrounds, gazebos, shelters, and other City-owned properties and related structures.
- Applies pesticides and fertilizers, and assists with landscaping, planting, and grounds beautification projects.
- Constructs, repairs, and maintains hiking and biking trails, as well as other asphalt roadways throughout the City.
- Assists with construction and repair activities on City owned properties, including roads, streets, bridges, and related infrastructure using graders, loaders, and other equipment.
- Installs, repairs, and maintains street signage across the City, including removal or replacement when necessary.
- Monitors and maintains catch basins, pumps, lift stations and other related structures and equipment to ensure proper stormwater management and flood control.
- Operates tractors, trucks, snowplows, and snow loaders to remove snow from City streets, sidewalks, and public areas.
- Maintain all equipment and tools used in the performance of duties to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Supports other City departments as needed; participate in the on-call schedule and remain available for emergency situations.
- Performs all other related duties as requested or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education, Experience, Licenses, Certifications
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Experience working in a municipal maintenance position
- Experience operating and maintaining light equipment
- Valid Class A MN Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements or the ability to obtain within 1 year of hire
Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Public Works Certificate preferred

- Lawn mowers, weed whips, woodchipper
- Snow removal equipment including shovels, plows, blowers

Physical Demands
- Safely operate both light and heavy equipment and tools
- Perform a variety of physical activities, including standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping, observing, climbing, and balancing, sometimes for extended periods.
- Lift, carry, and move objects weighing 80 pounds or more
- Work comfortably at heights or within trenches deeper than five feet
Working Conditions
- Drive to and from multiple work sites within the City
- Work outdoors in all seasons with exposure to wind, rain, snow, ice, and sun
- Perform duties in high-traffic areas and intersections
- Work within the confines of underground and overhead system structures and active construction sites
