Description
University Physicians Assocation is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time Social Worker (PSC) position with University Neurology, located in Knoxville, TN.
The Social Worker provides support to patients and families within a busy neurology practice. This role helps patients navigate the emotional, social, and practical challenges of living with neurological conditions, connecting them with appropriate resources, counseling, and care coordination to improve overall quality of life.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct psychosocial assessments for patients and families coping with neurological diagnoses (e.g., stroke, epilepsy, MS, Parkinson’s, dementia).
- Provide individual and family counseling to address adjustment, stress, and coping concerns.
- Educate patients and caregivers about community resources, support groups, financial assistance, home care, rehabilitation, and long-term care options. Speaking at events relevant to the diseases treated at the clinic (e.g., MS Day)
- Collaborate with neurologists, advanced practice providers, nurses, and other members of the care team to develop patient-centered plans.
- Advocate for patients and assist with applications for disability, insurance, or social services.
- Support patients in navigating advance care planning, guardianship, or end-of-life decisions as appropriate.
- Maintain accurate documentation in the electronic health record and comply with confidentiality and HIPAA standards.
- Participate in staff meetings, case conferences, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Provide crisis intervention when patients or families experience acute distress.
Work Environment: Outpatient neurology clinic with occasional travel to community resources or patient homes may be required.

Requirements
Master’s degree in social work (MSW) from an accredited program.
- Current state licensure (LCSW, LMSW, or equivalent depending on state regulations).
- 2+ years of experience in medical or clinical social work preferred, ideally with neurological or chronic illness populations.
- Knowledge of community resources, patient advocacy, and health insurance/benefits.
- Excellent communication, counseling, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary setting.
