POSITION SUMMARY:
This is work at the master mechanic level in the maintenance, alteration and repair of machinery, equipment and facilities. Work involves the performance of skilled and semi-skilled tasks. Although the employee may be at the master level in one trade area he is not considered to be at the master level in all tasks. Work is performed with general supervision from an administrative superior. Assignments vary in nature and are carried out in accordance with trade standards and applicable regulations. Has routine contact with the public and vendors.
CLASS DESCRIPTION:
This is skilled work in the maintenance, alteration and repair of machinery, equipment and facilities. Work involves the performance of skilled and un-skilled tasks. Work is performed with general supervision from a trades or administrative superior. Assignments vary depending on the demands of the group. They are carried out in accordance with instructions and established routines.
Position Duties
Include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
Performs industrial/ mechanical work in the installation, maintenance and repair of centrifugal, positive displacement and gear pumps, blowers, motors, valves, chemical metering pumps and a variety of other plant machinery. Troubleshoots defective equipment, disassembles, diagnoses malfunctions, overhauls, manufactures or replaces defective parts. Repair equipment and tools, estimates material and supplies needed for assigned jobs, prepares parts order forms and reports material used on work orders. Performs preventive maintenance on buildings, equipment and machinery such as adjusting cleaning and modifying equipment as needed. Installs heating and cooling equipment and diagnoses malfunctions of such equipment. Uses shop machinery to fabricate and repair parts such as welding machines, lathe, milling machine, grinders and drill press. Makes repairs to diesel and gas driven equipment such as pumps and generators. Uses brushes, rollers and spray guns to paint both interior and exterior surfaces. Other duties may be assigned.
Serves as a work leader for one to four employees in the maintenance crew. Carries out these responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include safety of the work crew and work site, directing the activities of the task being done and reporting problems that arise on the site.
This position is considered emergency essential, and, as such, the incumbent may be required to report for regular work shift during inclement weather, or then when an emergency situation arises.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or general education degree (GED; and three (3) years progressively skilled experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, outside weather conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, and risk of electrical shock. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
LANGUAGE SKILLS, MATHEMATICAL SKILLS AND REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Other Qualifications
Class C driver's license.
Wastewater Collection Class II and Water Distribution license may be required.
