Position Duties
- Assist in processing worker’s compensation claims; verify employee eligibility for coverage
- Support in processing insurance claims, investigating accidents involving county employees or property, provides assistance to insurers in investigations and settlement of claims both for and against the County
- Receives and reviews various records and reports such as safety and accident reports, vendor contracts, training manuals and OSHA regulations
- Prepares reports to NC Dept of Labor Public Sector OSH, US Dept of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics and US Dept of Labor OSHA to meet monitoring and compliance guidelines and submits to the Risk Management Consultant for review and approval
- Serves as liaison to insurance representatives and other parties involved with County claims/cases, Workers’ Compensation and ensures proper handling of claims
- Manages the record keeping for training, schedules and notifies employees on classes
- Assist with the County drug/alcohol testing program which include the random drug testing program; maintains all records and reports the results as required
- Stays up to date on regulatory requirements as it pertains to areas of concern and reports changes as required
- Maintains files and data related to risk management, worker’s compensation, loss preventions, and claims. Records data and compiles it into statistical analyses and reports

- Knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of Cumberland County as such pertains to the performance of the essential duties of the position
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of supporting risk management programs, to include workers’ compensation procedures, guidelines and policies, researching, analyzing and reporting on risk management information and recommendations, and training employees on risk management issues and procedures
- Knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the essential duties and responsibilities of the position, alcohol and drug testing and other related regulations; OSHA laws, rules, and regulations; standard safety practices and procedures
- Knowledge of Workers’ Compensation general statutes and regulations; and liability insurance coverage
- Skill in analyzing working conditions to determine unsafe work practices and recommend alternative methods and procedures
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with governmental agencies, employees and the public
- Skill in communicating ideas effectively both orally and in writing
- Ability to interpret applicable federal and State workplace safety and environmental regulations
- Ability to recommend and implement goals, policies and procedures for effective and efficient safety and risk management services
- Ability to analyze accident and risk trends to ensure the County is minimizing its risk exposure while effectively maintaining costs
- Ability to analyze operational, managerial or administrative issues to identify alternatives and implement solutions
- Ability to interpret and apply laws, regulations, guidelines and policy
- Ability to prepare and make presentations to groups
- Ability to exercise immediate remedial action to correct any quality deficiencies that occur in areas of responsibility
- Ability to enforce safety regulations with firmness and tact

Driving is an essential function of this position. To be considered, you must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. If your driver's license is from another state, you will be required to obtain and show proof of a valid NC driver's license within 60 days of hire.
