This position will focus primarily on hatchery production of seed shellfish, including algae production, broodstock conditioning, spawning, larval rearing, and nursery grow-out in a field setting. Activities will primarily occur at the Suffolk County Marine Environmental Learning Center in Southold and will move to nursery sites throughout Suffolk County as required. This position is intended to support the work of the research and/or production hatchery managers in producing shellfish.

    

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate Degree in biological or related sciences and least 1-year experience relevant to the position or High School Diploma role and 2 years volunteer or work experience.
  • Ability to work in a team setting.
  • Ability to embrace all interactions with clientele, staff, volunteers, and the public.
  • Ability to follow detailed protocols and maintain attention to detail,.
  • Ability to lift 20 - 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work outdoors and on boats in all weather conditions.
  • Must be reliable and able to work independently as well as with others.
  • Good communication and record-keeping skills.
  • Ability to understand and implement written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as appropriate.
  • Valid NYS Driver's License.
  • Ability to pass Motor Vehicle Screen and background check process

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in a related field.
  • Shellfish hatchery, shellfish nursery, or laboratory experience.
  • SCUBA Certified
  • Boating experience with valid NYS boating license/certificate
  • Trailering experience
  • Heavy machinery experience (e.g. skid steer)

POSITION DETAILS:

Salary:            $22-29 per hour

Schedule:      NONEXEMPT – Reg: 40 hours/week

No relocation or VISA Sponsorship available
