GENERAL SUMMARY:
Functions as a vascular technologist in the daily operations of the vascular laboratory of Brown Surgical Associates. Primary accountability is to the Nurse Manager, Vascular Procedures and the Chief of Vascular Surgery. Responsible for assigned daily testing in the vascular laboratories. Works independently and with little supervision. Exhibits understanding of the vascular laboratory equipment as well as proper use and care. Possesses knowledge of the organization, its programs and procedures related to the operations of the surgical office. Expert handling of patient issues and patient confidentiality are mandatory.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Performs ultrasound duplex scanning to diagnose and evaluate arterial diseases of the carotid arteries and the abdominal aorta, and arterial and venous diseases of the limbs. These include lesions, stenosis, occlusions, aneurysms, venous incompetence and thrombosis, and other vascular anomalies.
- Performs physiological evaluations to diagnose and evaluate arterial occlusive disease of the upper and lower extremities and digits, measuring pulse volumes and Doppler systolic blood pressures of the limbs and digits.
- Works with minimal supervision, identifies the need to modify protocols based on the patient’s disease process or condition, assesses and monitors the patient’s physical and mental status during the exam.
- Analyzes findings through the course of the exam so that sufficient and appropriate data is provided for the interpreting physician.
- Assesses the exam findings upon completion of the exam, recognizes when urgent intervention is indicated, and informs interpreting physician or Nurse Manager, Vascular Procedures.
- Documents the exam according to protocol and presents findings to the interpreting physician.
- Participates in maintenance of the patient log and database and patient files. Completes appropriate billing slips.
- Participates in the vascular lab’s quality assurance program, researching data and attending meetings as assigned.
- Monitors calibration, function and general condition of equipment used in patient testing.
- Maintains proper medical and equipment supply levels for vascular lab.
- Follows protocol for universal precautions.
- Performs basic patient care tasks as needed: such as attending to bedpans and urinals, changing simple dressings.
- Obtains continuing education credits in vascular technology as required by the Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Labs, and if registered, by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) or Registered Vascular Specialist (RVS) through CCI or graduate of a CAAHEP-approved technology program or twelve months full time vascular testing experience in addition to completion of a two-year allied health program or a bachelor’s degree.
- Three years’ experience with performance of at least 600 vascular exams.
- Certification in CPR training.
- Ability to represent the organization and serve consumers in a professional manner and promote a positive image of the organization and its services. Interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively with patients and their representatives.
- Knowledge of computer software and data entry.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Conditions common to a clinical practice environment including potential exposure to communicable diseases, medicinal preparations and hazardous materials. Involves frequent contact with patients. Work may be stressful at times.
