WAGE RANGE: $19.00-$21.00/hour
- Shift Differential:
Additional $0.50/hour 6 p.m. – 11 p.m. (Monday–Friday)
Additional $1.50/hour 11 p.m. – 6 a.m. (any day)
Additional $1.00/hour 6 a.m. – 11 p.m. (Saturday or Sunday)

- Sunday–Thursday 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
- Sunday–Thursday 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM
- Tuesday–Saturday 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM
- Sunday–Wednesday 11:30 PM – 10:00 AM
- Wednesday–Saturday 11:30 PM – 10:00 AM
Job Summary:
Under general supervision, the Shelter Advocate II provides direct support to individuals experiencing homelessness in a safe, low-barrier, housing-focused environment at our Higher Ground-Minneapolis location. This position builds positive relationships with clients, responds to immediate needs, connects clients to resources such as housing, employment, and healthcare, and intervenes in crisis using trauma-informed and de-escalation practices. Shelter Advocates help ensure the facility remains safe, welcoming, and organized, while upholding program policies in a respectful and consistent manner.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Client Engagement & Support
Provide compassionate, client-centered support through active listening, problem-solving, and assistance with daily needs.
Offer referrals and guidance related to housing, employment, benefits, recovery, and healthcare.
Encourage clients toward their housing goals while respecting choice and dignity.
Safety & Crisis Response
Maintain a safe and welcoming environment by monitoring common areas and completing safety rounds.
Respond to crises using trauma-informed de-escalation and conflict-resolution skills.
Administer Narcan and other harm-reduction interventions as required.
Complete incident reports related to safety, chemical use, or program rule violations.
Serve as a Mandated Reporter and follow all reporting requirements.
Operations & Documentation
Complete client intakes, enrollments, and exits in accordance with program requirements.
Accurately collect and manage client data in the system of record.
Enforce shelter and drop-in center rules fairly and consistently, balancing accountability with empathy.
Support daily operations including client check-in, belongings storage, meal service, and facility cleanliness.
Check belongings for prohibited items at entry to support safety.
Collaboration & Professional Development
Partner with supervisors, case managers, and community organizations to support client housing goals.
Participate in team meetings, trainings, and mentorship opportunities.
Contribute to program development and quality improvement efforts.
Other Duties as Assigned
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Must be at least 21 years old.
Ability to pass a criminal and Department of Human Services background check
Prior experience in a shelter or drop-in center preferred.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to remain calm, professional, and empathetic under pressure.
Commitment to trauma-informed care, harm-reduction, and housing-first principles.
Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment.
Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Outlook, internet browsers, data entry systems).
Physical Requirements:
Walk or stand for more than 2 hours per shift.
Lift up to 25 lbs without assistance.
CPR certification required (training provided).
