The Director of Major Gifts plans, implements and manages strategies for identification, cultivation, solicitation and closing of major gifts within a comprehensive fundraising program for Towson University with an emphasis on programs that support the College of Health Professions.  Focus on engaging individual alumni and friends while supporting the Deans and Vice Presidents of the University.   The Director of Major Gifts’ primary responsibility is to solicit and close gifts of $10,000 and above.  The Director will develop annual fundraising goals and objectives in consultation with the Senior Director of Development which may include upgrade strategies to secure leadership gift commitments ($1,000+) and the development of prospect cultivation plans.  She or he will build a dynamic portfolio based on a pipeline of prospects from identification, qualification/disqualification, and early engagement to cultivation and solicitation, moving on to stewardship and elevated engagement at senior volunteer levels.  The Director of Major Gifts will partner with the College of Health Professions Department Chairs, Associate Dean, and Dean to build comprehensive development and alumni engagement plans to span all areas of the college. Telework may be available for this position up to two days per week following the completion of 90 days of service in good standing.


  • Manage a portfolio of donors and prospects capable of providing gifts of $10,000 or more to the University.  Within this portfolio, steward supporters to upgrade giving while identifying and cultivating potential new donors.  This portfolio may consist of over 100 individuals (or families) with affiliations to the University and an affinity for the programming and offerings of the College of Health Professions.  Conduct relationship building activities predominantly through in person, virtual, telephone and electronic methods of engagement and communications.  Achieve activity and outcome-based performance metrics and capture data within CRM database. 

  • Partner with the Dean of the College of Health Professions and other members of the College’s leadership team to create and implement an engagement plan to build affinity, volunteerism, and shared ownership for the success of Towson University’s College of Health Professions. This plan should include expanding engagement opportunities to include all sectors and constituency groups, and to partner with the appropriate TU experts across colleges and divisions to further connect and activate these prospective partners.  Seek and participate in opportunities to build/implement/execute a case for support to increase giving among all constituents.

  • Bachelor’s Degree.

  • Minimum of 3 years of professional customer relationship experience, including sales, new business acquisition, marketing and/or communications skills. Non-profit annual giving or major gift experience a plus.

  • Well organized, able to handle multiple projects simultaneously and demonstrate initiative.

  • Demonstrated skills building marketing and communication plans through low cost channels with measurable outcomes.

  • Experience with donor database software / customer relationship management system.

  • Confidence in building relationships through in-person and electronic communication and engagement techniques.

  • Ability to work evenings and weekends throughout the year.

  • Ability to travel in and out of state.

  • Must be team-oriented, creative and able to exhibit excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Must have experience with Microsoft Office products.

Preferences:

  • Experience in managing a portfolio of prospects and donors/customers in order to consistently achieve financial goals.

  • Ability to build client trust via in person, telephone and electronic communications.

  • Nonprofit development, annual giving and/or major gift experience a plus.
