About the Department

Our Sioux City Parks and Recreation department is seeking (4) two part-time, self-directed group of individuals to be responsible for the primary operation of the IBP Ice Center as Parks and Recreation Specialists! The Ice Center provides a fun setting for a great position with the City of Sioux City.

Our specialists will oversee the operations of IBP Ice Center as we host hockey games, private ice rentals, and weekly public skate sessions. 

These Specialists will be trained on Zamboni operations, ensure facility is clean, oversee the concession stand, and staff safety. 

Candidates must be willing to work weeknights, weekends, and holidays.

Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application. 15-30 hours a week.

Position Duties

  • Provides customer service and engages in public relations duties.
  • Compiles and/or completes reports, such as incident, injury, routine financial, and scheduling.
  • Supervises and provides direction to assigned staff; logs/verifies payroll hours.
  • Works with the community to promote an understanding of the facility and goodwill toward the facility.  
  • Works with the public and supervises public and private-party participants.  
  • Sets up and takes down chairs, tables and recreational equipment.
  • Performs basic cleaning and maintenance including restrooms, trash removal, dry and wet mop, snow removal/ salting, and litter patrol.
  • Cleans, re-stocks and maintains floors and rugs using appropriate machinery.
  • Leads team in performing minor equipment repairs, maintaining glass surfaces, and completing painting task as required.
  • Leads a team in storing, preparing, and serving food products and refreshments in a manner that meets all local and state health code requirements as well as facility rules and guidelines.
  • Acts as a resource within the facility for their designated specialty providing guidance to other Parks and Recreation staff, user groups, and volunteers. 
  • Trains volunteers as necessary to satisfactorily carry out the specialty program involved.
  • Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the position as assigned by a supervisor.
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance and working hours. 
  • Expected to temporarily perform duties outside of normal classification in the event of a declared emergency.  In the event that an employee is excused from work other than being sick, they will be required to report to work in a state of declared emergency.

Minimum Qualifications

Job Knowledge:  Thorough knowledge of the equipment and techniques necessary to successfully oversee all facets of the facility; knowledge of first aid methods and necessary safety precautions to be used in public work; ability to coordinate multiple events and multi-task; knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services, this includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction; knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words and rules of composition and grammar.

Language Ability and Interpersonal CommunicationEffective communication skills and the ability to provide assistance to customers (external and internal);  ability to write and speak clearly, distinctly and effectively with fellow employees and the general public as to understand; ability to read in English and compare similarities and differences between words and series of numbers;  ability to  issue, and follow, verbal and written instructions; ability to work as a member of a team in order to accomplish tasks; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.

Physical RequirementsThe employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; taste or smell; ability to quickly move hands, hands together with arms, or two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects; ability to exert muscle force repeatedly or continuously over time; this involving moderate levels of muscular endurance and resistance to muscle fatigue; ability for repeated use of abdominal and lower back muscles to support operational tasks throughout the duration of a shift; ability to quickly and repeatedly bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with body, arms, and/or legs;ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer); ability to see details at a distance.  
Regularly lifts up to 10 pounds and occasionally lifts up to 30 pounds.

Work EnvironmentWork is equally performed outdoors year-round, and inside a recreation facility environment with appropriate heating and cooling and is subject to potential occupational or environmental hazards commonly associated with working in outdoor recreation; occasionally works with commercial food preparation equipment with related exposure to hot grease, food warmers, beverage dispensers, refrigerators, freezers and a variety of electrical appliances with potential to electric shock, cooking fumes and odors and hot grease; noise level in the workplace is usually moderate; may occasionally work in outside weather conditions with regular exposure to cold, often below zero degrees and low wind chill. Schedules/hours may every day to day, ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays. 

Other Qualifications

Graduation from High School; must be 18 years of age or older and one (1) year of related work experience in recreation, supervision of staff, or building maintenance experience.
