About the Department

We have an opportunity for a Senior Deputy District Attorney!

The Senior Deputy District Attorney position in the SVU unit, of the District Attorney's Office has supervisory responsibilities under the Chief Deputy District Attorney of their division. The vacancy is in SVU, but a Senior could rotate to District Court, County Court, Juvenile or SVU units. 

We are looking for an experienced prosecutor reflecting multiple years of felony prosecution experience, ideally with diversity in the areas of practice including experience in SVU. An attorney in a Senior role is expected to exercise significant independent discretion and judgment as well as provide training and supervision to junior attorneys. 

A person in this position is expected to be available to staff regularly Mon-Fri, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.; some evening and weekend hours may be necessary as needed. After a 90 day probationary period, 1 day per week of working from home may be available.

Position Duties

What you'll be doing:

  • Assists in the development of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for their unit, and for the District Attorney's Office.
  • Provides legal assistance, training and education to law enforcement officers.
  • Provides training, supervision, and review to less experienced Deputy District Attorneys in the SVU unit.
  • Attends major crime scenes in an advisory capacity to give legal advice to law enforcement officers conducting the on-scene investigations.
  • Backs-up and assists regularly assigned on-call Deputy District Attorneys.
  • Participates in the recruitment and selection of professional staff.
  • May receive and reviews felony case filing materials, including examining the evidence, witness statements, the nature of the crime, and whether the evidence justifies continued prosecution; and makes independent filing decisions.
  • Prepares briefs and legal opinions; conducts legal research; prepares reports and develops recommendations related to the District Attorney's Office policies, procedures and operations.
  • Represents the office in felony level criminal proceedings including the scheduling of cases, plea negotiations, probation revocation hearings, motions, and sentencings.
  • Functions as lead trial attorney for a wide range of criminal matters, focusing on complex felony prosecutions and assisting less experienced Deputy District Attorneys on other cases.

  • Strong legal skills and demonstrated legal ability.
  • Experience supervising and training legal or professional staff.
  • Background working with victims of serious crimes, including children.
  • Ability to review explicit evidence and make sound legal decisions based on the material.

  • Senior Deputy District Attorney positions are generally filled by advancement of a Deputy District Attorney IV or similarly qualified candidate.
  • Equivalent to a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school required.
  • Must be licensed to practice law in the state of Colorado.

Other Qualifications

This is an exempt position and Seniors are expected to be available on-call and go out on a crime scene as needed (day or night) based on the on-call schedule (which rotates). This person will report to Kim Bubka, Chief Deputy District Attorney of the SVU unit.
