About the Department

The Village of Buffalo Grove and its Community Development Department are seeking a full-time Permit Technician. 

The Village of Buffalo Grove is located thirty-three miles northwest of downtown Chicago and twenty miles north of O’Hare International Airport. Under the direct supervision of the Administrative Support Manager, this position will be responsible for a variety of administrative duties assisting the Community Development Department with day-to-day operations. The main functions of the Permit Clerk role involve processing permit applications, coordinating inspections, and providing a high quality of customer service to the public.

Position Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
This position is responsible for working with Village staff, contractors, residents, and businesses in all areas of building permitting and license processing. Responsibilities of the permit clerk include, but are not limited to:
 
•    Acts as the main point of contact for the Building Division
•    General clerical work of moderate complexity and variety
•    Clerical assistance to CD Staff including filing, organizing, searching, digitizing and producing records
•    Maintains permit and licensing files and updates as needed
•    Assists customers with permit process requirements
•    Prompt processing of permit applications, inspection requests and contractor license applications
•    Routes permits to appropriate staff for review
•    Monitors status of permits, contractor license application and permit expirations
•    Proactively seeks process improvements to enhance the customer experience
•    Assists with daily deposit, preparing daily inspection files, and administration of the Village’s rental licensing program
•    Assists in special projects, and all other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS
Qualified applicants must possess a high school diploma or GED; a minimum of one to two years’ experience in a similar position is desired or an equivalent combination of experience and/or training will be considered. Experience working with the public in a customer service environment is required. Experience permitting commercial projects and ICC permit technician training and/or certifications are preferred. In addition, the successful candidate has strong organizational skills, is detail oriented, able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment, has knowledge of Office 365 and permitting software, and a basic understanding of plats of surveys and blueprints.

The Village of Buffalo Grove offers a competitive salary starting at $56,378.40 DOQ +/- and a comprehensive benefit package including health, dental, vision, and basic life insurance, and enrollment in IMRF as well as other voluntary opportunities for retirement.
