About the Department

Primary duty is to enforce the City of Florence Animal Control Ordinances. This entails the impoundment of dogs running at large within the city limits of Florence and issuing warnings and citations to owners of dogs violating the ordinances. Duties of the position also include the impoundment and transporting of various types of animals to the animal shelter, to include unwanted, stray, sick, diseased, injured and vicious animals. The position may also require the officer to assist the Health Department with investigations and animal bites. The officer is also responsible for enforcing animal cruelty laws in the city and county, educating the public about animal welfare, assisting in euthanasia and general cleaning and maintenance of shelter and grounds.

Position Duties

1. Investigates Complaint Calls: Receives complaint calls via mobile radio.
2. Speaks to complainant concerning complaints.
3. Informs complainant of action to be taken.
4. Takes action on complaints. Impounds Animals: Impound animals running at large within the city limits. Impound injured, sick, and diseased animals. Impound animals that have been cruelly treated.
5. Issues Warnings and Citations: Issues notices to owners concerning their animals.
6. Issues warning citations to violators of the city's animal control ordinances.
7. Issues citations to violators of the city's animal control ordinances.
8. Obtains warrants for violators of city and state laws pertaining to animals.
9. Prepares incident and complaint reports on actions taken.
10. Prepares dog bite reports.
11. Maintains a daily animal control officer's log.
12. Prepares impoundment cards on animals impounded.
13. Prepares missing animal reports.
14. Maintain controlled substance log.
15. Operates Animal Control Devices and Equipment:
    1. Operates animal control vehicle.
    2. Operates animal control catch pole.
    3. Operates snake control stick.
    4. Operates animal control leash.
    5. Uses animal transport cages.
    6. Uses animal stretcher.
    7. Uses dart gun. Uses TASER gun.
16. Places and sets live animal traps.
17. Euthanizes sick, injured, and unwanted animals.
18. Cleans and maintains animal shelter, grounds, and vehicles as needed to keep in good order.
19. Must live within 30 miles via public road of animal shelter.
20. Must have and maintain a telephone.
21. Must be able to work all hours because of nature of emergency after-hours calls.
22. Other duties as required by Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Education equivalent to completion of high school.
2. Experience in the handling of animals.
3. Must successfully complete the animal control academy within twelve months after employment with the Animal Control Department.
4. A valid driver's license.
5. Must obtain EBI (Euthanasia by Injection) certification through the State of Alabama within 12 months of hire and maintain certification license.
6. Must obtain certification in the use of a TASER within 12 months of hire and maintain certification license.
7. Must obtain C.P.R. Certification within 18 months.

Other Qualifications

1. Knowledge of various types of animals and their habits.
2. Knowledge of various animal sicknesses and diseases.
3. Knowledge of enforcement of ordinances and laws.
4. Considerable knowledge of the City of Florence and Lauderdale County area.
5. Thorough knowledge of the English Language and spelling.
6. Ability to apprehend various types of animals, including some of a vicious nature.
7. Ability to operate various types of trucks and vehicles.
8. Ability to operate a 2-way radio.
9. Ability to learn animal control procedures.
10. Ability to operate steam cleaner, lawnmower, and weed eater.
11. Ability to perform Euthanasia by Injection in accordance with State and Federal Guidelines.
12. Knowledge of DEA Guidelines and documentation in the use of a controlled substance.
13. Ability to compute and calculate a proper dosage of a controlled substance.
14. Ability to document the use of controlled substances to DEA Standards.
15. Knowledge and use of a TASER for purposes of defense, and/or capture of dangerous animals.

Physical Demands:

1. Ability to do strenuous outside work.
2. Ability to lift 75 lbs. or more.
3. Must take rabies immunization.
4. Must be able to obtain TASER certification.
