Job Title: Director of Construction
Reports To: Chief Program Officer (CPO)
Director of Construction – Habitat for Humanity of Forsyth County
The Director of Construction is a senior leadership role within Habitat for Humanity of Forsyth County’s Construction Team. This position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of construction, land development, and community engagement, ensuring that new home construction aligns with Habitat’s standards, mission, and strategic goals. The Director of Construction serves as a key member of the leadership team, working closely with executive leadership to explore innovative construction strategies, expand affordable housing opportunities, and strengthen community partnerships.
Position Type: Full-time, Exempt (37.5 hours per week)
Typical Schedule: Monday – Friday (some weekends or evenings may be required)
Supervision Responsibilities
- Lead all Construction Staff, including Superintendent, Site Supervisors and New Home Construction associates, conducting weekly meetings and annual performance reviews.
- Oversee professional development and mentoring for Site Supervisors to ensure excellence in carpentry and construction leadership.
- Set and enforce high construction standards for all Habitat homes in Forsyth County, performing regular site walk-throughs and reporting on progress to executive leadership.
- Serve as primary liaison with builders, trades, and contractors to improve, revise, and maintain building models aligned with Habitat standards.
Construction & Site Management
- Oversee all activity on construction sites, including scheduling, coordination, quality control and inspections.
- Serve as the general contractor for Habitat projects, including securing permits, inspecting work, and ensuring compliance with local codes and Green Building Specifications System Vision, if applicable.
- Maintain organization and safety on all construction sites, including material, equipment, and vehicle management.
- Supervise the Warehouse Construction Associate to ensure timely inventory management and materials planning.
- Lead house production bi-weekly meetings and actively monitor project timelines, budgets, and resources.
Community & Volunteer Engagement
- Ensure volunteer efforts are coordinated on construction sites, providing orientation, task assignments, and safety oversight.
- Serve as a visible representative of Habitat’s mission to volunteers, donors, and the broader community, including the Homebuilders Association.
- Ensure volunteer activities are productive, safe, and meaningful, stepping in to lead groups when necessary.
- Collaborate with the Volunteer and Community Engagement Manager to plan volunteer engagement throughout the year.
Homeowner Support
- Conduct and/or coordinate homeowner construction orientations and final walk-throughs in partnership with Family Services staff.
- Support homeowner education in construction, maintenance, and safety, helping homeowners develop practical skills for long-term homeownership.
Land & Development Oversight
- Evaluate potential lot developments and make recommendations based on feasibility, cost, and mission alignment.
- Assist in acquiring land for development through auctions, partnerships, or other strategic opportunities, within funding parameters.
- Collaborate with executive leadership to explore alternative construction methods, innovative partnerships, and long-term growth strategies.
- Support planning and execution of site development, including grading, infrastructure, and environmental compliance as required.
Additional Responsibilities
- Assist with setup and breakdown of temporary jobsite facilities (storage, power, access, etc.)
- Promote continuity of construction techniques and volunteer experience across all projects.
- Maintain stewardship of financial and material resources, negotiating vendor and supplier agreements to ensure cost-effectiveness.
- Convey Habitat’s mission effectively to all stakeholders, reinforcing the organization’s values and ethical standards.
Requirements
Qualifications
- Extensive on-site experience in residential construction and project management.
- Strong skills in framing, siding, finish carpentry, drywall, paint, light plumbing, and light electrical.
- Experience as a general contractor with a General Contractors License, including permitting, inspections, and compliance knowledge.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and supervise staff effectively.
- Knowledge of land development, lot acquisition, and construction planning is strongly preferred, multi-family, condo, townhome building knowledge/experience preferred.
- Familiarity with Habitat for Humanity programs, volunteers, and mission-based construction is highly recommended.
- Physical ability to work outdoors, use tools, and lift 75 pounds.
- Current and valid NC driver’s license and ability to operate construction vehicles.
