About the Department

The Maintenance Department is looking to fill A Mechanic in the department.

The "A" Mechanic will perform all aspects of periodic and emergency maintenance procedures on all Agency vehicles assigned (cars, vans, trucks, and buses) including but not limited to inspections and diagnosis if mechanical defects and failures and their repair, rebuilding (engines, transmissions, differentials, body repairs, etc.) and/or replacement of various vehicle components and systems, operate Agency vehicles as necessary (non-revenue service), make road calls as needed, maintain proper maintenance and inventory records, assist in the in-service training programs for "B" and "C" Mechanics & Servicers, and perform related tasks as required.

Please be advised that this may involve assignment at either our Riverside or Hemet locations. Applicants must be available to work 7 days per week, including holidays and all shifts.

Position Duties

Essential job duties include but not limited to:

  • Inspections and diagnosis of mechanical defects and failures and their repair;
  • Rebuilding (engines, transmissions, differentials, body repairs, etc.) and/or replacement of various vehicle components and systems;
  • Operate Agency vehicles as necessary (non-revenue service);
  • Make road calls as needed;
  • Maintain proper maintenance and inventory records;
  • Assist in the in-service training programs for "B" and "C" Mechanics & Servicers; 
  • Perform related tasks as required.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school or its equivalent with at least three (3) years experience in the maintenance of heavy-duty equipment or buses.  Knowledge of electronic testing equipment, basic electronic technical skills and computer operations. 


LICENSE(S), CERTIFICATES, REGISTRATION
Must have a valid non-restricted California driver's license, a Class B permit by first day of employment and be able to obtain a Class B license and medical certificate within ninety (90) days of employment.

OTHER REQUIREMENT(S)

At the time of application:
A current, valid, and non-restricted Class C Driver's License is required along with an excellent driving record. Additionally, a DMV K4 printout (issued not more than 30 days prior to date of application) must be provided with the application.  You must obtain the official K4 directly from the DMV, online history printouts are not acceptable and will result in your application being rejected. 

Your established driving history must be clear of the following: any suspensions within the past five (5) years; and have no more than three (3) points within the past five (5) years and no two (2) point violations.
No accidents which applicant contributed to cause within 3 years from your application date.
Have appeared in court as required.

PLEASE NOTE: 
The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) wants to inform commercial driver license (CDL) customers about new requirements and updated acceptable documents that becomes effective on May 10, 2017. All new commercial driver license applicants will be required to provide the DMV with proof of California residency as well as proof of U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent residency, or legal presence. The new requirements apply to original and renewal CDL applicants, as well as CDL cardholders who request a license upgrade.

A few examples of acceptable legal presence documents include:
•A valid, unexpired U.S. passport or passport card
•Certified copy of a birth certificate with a State Office of Vital Statistics or equivalent
•A valid, unexpired Permanent Resident Card
•A valid, unexpired employment authorization document (EAD)
•A valid, unexpired foreign passport with an approved I-94 form

Note to Internal Candidates:
The following areas will be reviewed as part of the selection process: 

  • Will be required to pass job related skills test(s).Testing may include, but is not limited to:
    • Written test(s)
    • Oral test(s)
    • Practical test(s)
  • Past year performance record will be reviewed:
    • Discipline other than attendance & accidents - only 1 written warning in last year. Excludes accidents and attendance, which are described below. 
    • Must have zero additional disciplinary actions, i.e. no:
      • Further Written Warnings
      • Final Warnings
      • Suspension
    • Must have no more than 1 Late Arrival within the last 12 months. 
    • Must have no more than 1 Attendance Point in the last year.  
    • Preventable Accidents - only 1 written warning within the last year.
    • Performance Appraisal ratings must be at or above "Meets Standards."
    • Applications to transfer to a different department, will be accepted once the 120 day probationary period has been successfully completed.

Other Qualifications

Applications and driving records will be evaluated and only qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the selection process which may include: Driving record review (pass/fail), a performance exam (pass/fail), and an oral interview (100% weight).  FAILURE TO PROVIDE A CURRENT DMV K4 driving record (issued not more than 30 days prior to date of application) will disqualify your application.  The examinations will be used to assess the applicant's knowledge, skills and abilities as they relate to the position.  The selection procedures may change depending on the needs of the Agency; if such changes apply, qualified applicants will be notified prior to the administration of examinations.
