The Role

Canopius (www.canopius.com) is a global specialty lines (re)insurer. We are one of the leading insurers in the Lloyd’s of London insurance market with offices in the UK, US, Singapore, Australia and Bermuda. 

We are seeking a strategic Senior HR Business Partner (London City based) supporting the UK and Group Underwriting business unit, accountable for designing and executing HR workforce plans that drives and supports commercial performance through impactful people activities. The role holder will also support Canopius’ transformation and growth ambitions by collaborating with HR Centres of Excellence to deliver on impactful talent development, engagement, and retention initiatives. 

Reporting to the Head of HR UK, this role will lead strategic HR plans for the business unit, to enhance business outcomes, enable data-driven HR decision-making for the Capability area, and advance the People Agenda to support Canopius as a high-performing London Market Carrier. The role also fosters strong HR partnerships with Leadership and UK ExCo members. 

This position underpins organisational and regional goals by providing expert and commercially focused HR advice and driving people-focused initiatives that deliver measurable business performance and employee success.

Key Responsibilities

Deliver for the Business
• Deeply understand Canopius’ business model to provide strategic HR consulting and deliver people initiatives that drive and supports business performance.
• Build and sustain strong, value-driven relationships with senior stakeholders through trusted HR counsel and partnership.
• Act as a trusted advisor to senior leadership, offering constructive challenge and influence to support business objectives.
• Establish influential relationships within a matrix environment across business leaders and HR colleagues, exemplifying Canopius’ values and culture.
• Champion the Inclusion & Diversity strategy within Capabilities, driving measurable progress aligned with Group and UK-specific goals.
• Collaborate to develop strategic workforce plans, leading key initiatives that advance the People Strategy.
• Promote accountability for employee engagement across the UK, supporting manager-led action plans within Capabilities.
• Ensure robust talent and succession planning, partnering with the business to advance targeted development programs.
• Drive transformational talent initiatives to attract, develop, and retain top industry talent.
• Lead and support key change management projects as required.
• Proactively implement strategic HR solutions to reduce employee relations issues across Capabilities.
• Regularly leverage meaningful HRMI data analytics to identify HR risks within their respective Capability and to create and implement add-value HR solutions to address / mitigate such HR risks.


Deliver for the HR Capability
• Positively support the Head of HR UK in advancing regional HR initiatives, collaborating closely with HR Centres of Excellence and Business Partners to ensure a consistent employee experience and effective implementation of the People Strategy, including Reward, Talent, Performance Management, and Culture.
• Embed and champion strategic HR initiatives across the organisation.
• Closely support the delivery of the overall Talent Strategy to align with global initiatives and business objectives.
• Partner across the employee lifecycle to identify trends and provide feedback to the HR Organisational Development Team, ensuring HR priorities meet business needs.
• Act as a change agent by introducing innovative ideas that support the People Strategy.
• Closely collaborate with HR Centres of Excellence on governance to maintain compliance with employment laws, policies, and regulatory requirements.
• Utilise strong communication and influencing skills to educate and implement core HR initiatives successfully across the business. 

Skills and Experience:

• Strong and consistent HR experience supporting Underwriting insurance business units strongly preferred but not essential. Other senior HR experience considered from finance / investment banking / professional services industries.
• Strong track record in senior HR Business Partnering, supporting Heads of Desks / C-Suite stakeholders and providing strategic HR support and advice through strategic HR planning
• Strategic HR thinker with the ability to advise and partner with senior executives, and other internal functions within an Organisation.
• Clear skills in communication (verbal and written), influencing, negotiation and challenge
• Positive team collaboration skills with an ability to embrace change.
• Analytical and commercially minded, and can work in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
• Ability to meet tight deadlines without compromising on quality or detail.
• CIPD qualified preferred.
