Position Information:

  • Start Date: January 5 – March 27, 2026
  • Hours: 40 hours per week (9:00 – 5:00pm)
  • Location: Moorhead, MN
  • Compensation: $20.00/hour

Intern, News – MPR News Moorhead:

As a News intern, you will be an important part of MPR News. You will help create broadcast and digital content focused exclusively on local coverage in the Fargo-Moorhead area and throughout northwestern Minnesota that serves audiences on our MPR News website, social platforms, newsletters, podcasts, radio stations, as well as other MPR brands, as applicable, through our Minnesota Trust Initiative.

 

Key Learning Goals:

The goal of this internship is to provide you with immersive learning and real-world experience through impactful work. By the end of your internship, you will be able to:

  • Write clear, concise radio and print copy
  • Complete stories on a tight timeline
  • Mix your own radio stories and understand all aspects of broadcast reporting and production
  • Sharpen your overall journalism prowess through work alongside experienced reporters and editors
  • Add at least one longer-term project to your journalism portfolio through collaboration with editors and digital production staff

 

Responsibilities:

In this hands-on role, you will:

  • Support story production by working directly with the Regional Editor to:
    • Record and edit audio for broadcast
    • Write news copy for broadcast and digital platforms, including newsletters
    • Voice and produce stories, as needed
  • Assist MPR Reverb and digital teams by recording video and taking photographs for distribution on MPR News social media platforms
  • Assist MPR Events team with tasks related to live or taped broadcast events in the Fargo-Moorhead area.

Programming:

  • Participate in robust on-boarding experience
  • Professional development: on-the-job training, intercultural development assessment, formal performance review feedback sessions, etc.
  • Participate in brown bag sessions to gain broader perspective of the organization

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Students who are currently enrolled and have completed one year of their post-secondary program, are enrolled in a graduate program, or have earned a degree in the last 18 months
  • Able to work 9:00 - 5:00pm central; Monday - Friday
  • Strong writing, research, and communication skills
  • Self-motivation, resourcefulness, curiosity, creativity, accuracy
  • Passion for telling distinctive stories and amplifying community voices
  • Awareness of current events
  • Proven ability to work efficiently and meet deadlines

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using audio production or editing equipment
  • Basic knowledge of issues important to Minnesota
