PAT Nurse, RN Pre-Op Coordinator
The RN Pre-Op Coordinator will work Monday-Friday, 0800-1630, and will report to the Pre-Op PACU Manager and the Director of Surgery. The role of the RN this position is to prepare the patient and their chart for their upcoming procedure, working to ensure that pre-operative education has been delivered to the patient or their caregiver/s, and that required documents have been received and test results have been gathered to the patients chart.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES
Complete the pre-op interview and prepare the patient for arrival to the surgery center by making sure that all required documentation and pre-operative testing have been received and recorded in the patient chart. Serves as a patient advocate, resource and contact person for patients. Provide information to the patient/caregiver to assure that they know what to expect and understand their pre-operative instructions and ensure that all questions have been answered, such as arrival time to the hospital, NPO status, medication to hold, etc. Provides basic education information to patients and family, focusing on self-care appropriate to their age and identified learning considerations and needs. Perform the post-op follow-up phone call with the patient or their caregiver/s. Close communication gaps with provider’s offices and perioperative staff by accessing the patient chart and surgical schedule to provide continuity of care. Ensure that the pre-op medication reconciliation has been accurately completed in the patient chart. Ensure that pre-operative medications, order sets, and post-operative orders are initiated in a timely fashion. Direct patients to obtain all pre-operative clearances and history and physical appointments (H&P's) prior to the operative day. Handle incoming phone calls from patients and providers in a timely and courteous manner. Communicate with other health care team members to assure continuity of care and a smooth admission process. Demonstrates an ability to remain calm, perform effectively and professionally during peak periods of activity and emergency situations. Participates in training, orientation, credentialing and education of new employees. Communicates professionally, clearly, concisely and accurately, creating a working climate that promotes growth, team spirit and job satisfaction of personnel. Acts in a professional manner, reflecting the mission of the Medical Center and compliant with policies, procedures, regulatory agencies and professional requirements. Maintains economical and efficient nursing care in a clean and safe environment. Demonstrates ongoing understanding of Corporate Compliance issue. Performs other duties as assigned by the Nursing Director.

- Handwriting is legible 100% of the time.
- Demonstrates compliance with patient confidentiality 100% of the time.
- Demonstrates competence in specific computer applications.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Current RN license recognized by the State of Iowa Board of Nursing.
- Knowledge of nursing care in accordance with regulations and practices established by the Iowa Board of Nursing.
- Successful demonstration of competence in Basic Life Support (Health Care Provider).
- Successful completion of Clinical Services general nursing and unit specific orientation.
- Consistently demonstrates a team approach to care.
- Demonstrates effective communication strategies.
- Advanced computer experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 2 years’ experience in specialty clinics or peri-operative nursing
