Job Summary
The Wireless Network Engineer will report to the Associate Director, Wired and Wireless, who serves as a technical engineer for the network services team at UCSF. The Wireless Network Engineer is responsible for the daily operational support, maintenance, improvement, documentation, and implementation of all network’s wireless services under the wired and wireless portfolio.
Ensures IT meets both the current and future network service needs of a broad range of customers, partners, and key stakeholders in administrative and academic units. Guides a team of engineers to drive innovative solutions, ensuring the delivery of best-in-class service to UCSF. Direct strategic and operational planning to achieve business goals, prioritizing initiatives and coordinating the evaluation, deployment, and management of current and future IT systems across the organization. Ensures flexible, efficient, and reliable systems able to adjust to future demands consistent with the health and campus growth and vision.
The Wireless Network Engineer will positively impact UCSF’s operations and culture by ensuring UCSF's IT infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in service of the UCSF’s academic mission. This team member will advance UCSF’s mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across stakeholders. This role will execute the University’s vision while modeling UCSF’s culture and values. The IT Network Services department is comprised of Network Security, Network Field Services, Network Wired and Wireless Services, and Network Infrastructure Services. We are one of a few organizations within the Academic Healthcare space with an IT Network Organization that supports clinical, research, and academic environments. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors, including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. Certain terms and conditions of employment for this position, including the rate of *pay and benefits, are subject to negotiation with the appropriate union. *The current annual salary range for this position is $113,800 - $242,800. Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in one or more of the following fields: computer science, engineering, computer information systems, etc.
- Five or more years of experience working in one or more of the following fields: network services, field services, information technology or network operations.
- Extensive experience in information technology, network engineering, or wireless networks.
- Extensive Experience troubleshooting wireless networks, including client experience testing, wireless packet analysis, managing support cases with external technology vendors, performing active and passive wireless site surveys, etc. Demonstrated ability to perform advanced troubleshooting including packet analyzers for both wired and wireless networks supporting security measures, multicast, dynamic routing, and load balancing.
- Experience with 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, RF design, and WLAN fundamentals. Knowledge of LAN/WAN and network protocols. Knowledge of monitoring tools and commands to ensure the quick resolution of issues.
- Extensive experience designing controller clustering, failover methods and caveats, group management, AP modes of operation, patching, RF management, etc. Extensive experience with wireless optimizations, including AP placement, ideal signal levels, optimized roaming, spectrum selection, channel tuning, cell optimization, QoS, etc.
- Experience managing and documenting wireless networks, overlaying APs onto CAD (or similar) blueprints for heat mapping, and with 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, RF design and WLAN fundamentals.
- Advanced understanding of LAN/WAN and network protocols and wireless monitoring tools for quick issue resolutions.
- Demonstrated level of understanding of modern enterprise TCP/IP networks using standards and technologies including but not limited to: OSPF, BGP, STP, RSTP, 802.1Q, Multicast, VRF-lite, QoS and IPSEC.
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills. Ability to effectively communicate with customers, understand their needs, and provide support and guidance in a professional manner. Able to establish and advance positive working relationships and a strong rapport with team members, stakeholders, and customers.
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and resolve complex network issues.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and can communicate technical information and ideas to a diverse community of colleagues and stakeholders.
- Strong organizational skills and can balance competing priorities and support concurrent projects. Experience working in a project-based environment using leading project management practices, including schedule management, status reporting, and communication of project risks and issues.
- Strong demonstrated problem-solving skills; scopes solutions based on knowledge of available resources and timelines. Able to ask questions, gather information, evaluate options, and make decisions with integrity.
- The position requires one to work onsite in San Francisco when needed per business needs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced knowledge about local, state, and federal regulations related to IT systems, privacy laws, safety standards, and service level agreement adherence. Demonstrated discipline in recognizing and handling confidential and sensitive information, with proven ability to provide detailed information and summaries to management.
- Experience with Aruba Wireless and ClearPass NAC, and solid knowledge of server and virtual technologies.
- Thinks creatively and proposes innovative ideas, including the incorporation of new technologies or processes. Is able to work with agility in a fast-paced environment.

- CompTIA Network+ Certification or Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
- Aruba Certified ClearPass Professional (ACCP) or equivalent
- Aruba Certified Mobility Professional (ACMP) or equivalent
