Our consultants and experts work closely with attorneys and other stakeholders involved in construction project disputes (owners, developers, project management, in-house counsel) to provide, with a high degree of accuracy and consistency, analyses and opinions that are expected to be upheld in a court of law or other venue.
Job Description:We are looking for students with a demonstrated interest in the construction industry to join our construction scheduling practice in Alexandria, Virginia. In this position, interns will work closely with our construction and accounting experts to assist in the preparation and analysis of change orders and litigation-type documents such as requests for equitable adjustment (REAs) and claims.
Responsibilities include:
- Analyzing construction schedules
- Reviewing construction project documentation
- Building progress summaries
- Assisting in the preparation of expert reports for use in legal proceedings
- Supporting experts and attorneys during trials or hearings
Interns should expect to work simultaneously on multiple projects of various types across different industries (including industrial, infrastructure, commercial, multifamily, healthcare, and utility projects). Interns should expect to “own” parts of the analysis and quickly become familiar with both the construction and disputes process.
Qualifications:- Working towards a BS in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Construction Management, Building Construction. Individuals with experience and/or interest in construction with technical backgrounds may also be considered.
- Experience/familiarity with Critical Path Method (CPM) scheduling concepts and scheduling tools, including Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Project, Phoenix Project Management, SureTrak, and/or Primavera P3/P6.
- Ability to problem-solve and evaluate strengths/weakness of multiple arguments.
- Desire and ability to learn about, analyze, and explain new or unfamiliar technical concepts relating to varying types of construction projects.
- Excellent initiative and organizational, communication (written and verbal), presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Willing to travel domestically and internationally at times.
Additional Desirable Qualifications:
- EIT, or the successful candidate will plan to pursue the Fundamentals of Engineering exam if not already obtained. Following successfully obtaining the EIT designation, when qualified, Vertex will support candidates pursuing their Professional Engineering (PE) licensure
- Knowledge of Lean Construction principles and pull-planning
The compensation for this role is between $25 - $35 per hour, commensurate with experience and location.
