Job Summary
Pipe Fitters are responsible for replacing, installing, cutting, fabricating and inspecting all manner of hoses, piping, valves and tubing on locomotives, passenger cars and engines.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Sheetmetal work consists of both pipefitting and tinsmith duties.
- Pipefitter work consists of cutting, binding, threading, repairing and applying pipe connections to passenger cars and diesel locomotives. Also consists of layout and installation of piping for high-pressure steam in yards, shops and buildings. Pipefitter will be required to inspect/repair equipment, which will include stooping, crouching, and kneeling in confined spaces.
- Tinsmith work consists of layout, fabrication, assembly and installation of all types of sheet metal and/or their substitutes. Also includes complete air conditioning ducting in passenger cars. Tinsmith will be required to handle sheets of metal 4' x 8'.
Required Education and Experience
- A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent (GED or TASC) approved by a State’s Department of Education or recognized accredited organization.
- Ability to perform all pipe installation duties including welding, and layout and fabrication work, including soldering and brazing.
- Must possess thorough knowledge of associated hand tools and sheet metal shop mechanics.
- Ability to work inside and outside in all types of weather conditions.
- Must be able to walk short distances (80-100 feet) frequently during an 8-hour shift and greater distances (up to 1000 feet or more) daily.
- Knowledgeable in shop mathematics.

- 70% – 1st 240 days of compensated service.
- 70% – 2nd 240 days of compensated service.
- 75% – 3rd 240 days of compensated service.

- 90% – 5th 240 days of compensated service.
- 90% – 6th 240 days of compensated service.
- 95% – 7th 240 days of compensated service.
- 100% – After 1,680 days of compensated service.
- Rate: $42.601 is the 100% hourly rate of pay.
- 70% – 1st 240 days of compensated service.
- 75% – 2nd 240 days of compensated service.

- Pursuant to the New York State Public Officers Law & the MTA Code of Ethics, all employees who hold a policymaking position must file an Annual Statement of Financial Disclosure (FDS) with the NYS Commission on Ethics and Lobbying in Government (the “Commission”).
- Actual salary offers may vary based on individual work experience. The annual salary range is subject to change and may be modified at the company’s discretion.
- Employees driving company vehicles must complete defensive driver training once every three years for current MTA drivers; or within 180 days of hire or transfer for an employee entering an authorized driving position.
- Current employees should be in their current position 12 months prior to starting a new role and must possess a satisfactory work history, including attendance and discipline record.
