Position Title: Special Education Assistant (Child Specific Assistant)
Job Classification: Classes 7.5 and 8.5 (PACE) available
Qualifications:
1. High School Diploma; Associate’s or higher degree, or at least two years of study at an institution of higher education.
2. Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to relate effectively with students with learning, physical and emotional disabilities.
3. Strong communication skills and demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment.
4. Ability to understand and follow directions and to implement instructional strategies under the supervision of a teacher.
5. Understanding of and commitment to confidentiality.
6. Any additional or alternative qualifications as deemed appropriate by the Board of School Directors.
Principal Functions:
To assist in the delivery of a student’s educational program under the direction of his or her teacher(s) so as to support student success in the educational program to the highest degree possible.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities*:
1. Assists the teacher(s) in the delivery of instruction and provides tutorial assistance to the individual and/or small groups of students in the classroom.
2. Assists the teacher(s) with the day-to-day operation of the classroom.
3. Assists with the supervision of the assigned student(s) in the classroom or in other areas of the school and school grounds.
4. Assists the teacher(s) in the preparation of instructional materials and other teaching aids.
5. Handles routine clerical functions such as student documentation, record keeping, copying and disseminating materials.

6. Works confidentially and cooperatively with other staff members, including specialists and therapists, to incorporate student services within the classroom environment.
7. Performs other related duties as directed by the teacher(s) or building principal.

Physical Necessities and Work Environment:
Position requires sitting, standing, walking or moving throughout the building, often for extended periods of the workday. Must be able to hear (40 decibel loss maximum), verbally communicate, and have vision requirements of near acuity of 20 inches or less and far acuity of 20 feet or more with depth perception, accommodation and field vision. Required to move (push, pull, lift, carry, slide) office supplies weighing no more than 45 pounds. Also required to occasionally to lift student or assist with physical needs. Performs a variety of duties, able to make judgments and work under high level of stress. Climb stairs in and or around the building. May occasionally bend and/or reach to secure records/files from desk, shelves and filing cabinets. Requires use of either hand for simple grasping, fine manipulation, and push/pull functions. Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
