Evaluation Period:

Formative evaluations throughout the school year as per MCS Performance and Assessment procedures.

Annual summative evaluation prior to July 1.

Purpose of the Position: Provide nursing services, including direct services requiring skilled nursing care, critical analysis, and quick action in emergency care; provide professional appraisal, teaching, and consulting services beyond the pupil population to parents and school personnel; communicate with the Director and Nurses on important health matters as they occur.

Classified as Confidential Employee: Functional responsibilities or knowledge in connections with the issues involved in dealings between the school corporation and its employees require strict adherence to confidentiality.

Minimum Requirements:

Registered Nursing degree

Essential Functions of the Position:

Participate in establishing school health policies in cooperation with school personnel and community resources
Identify and follow up children with suspected health problems
- Conduct yearly vision screening – for grades as required by IDOH and all special education students and referrals using Modified Clinic Technique for all students in grade one, including eye exam by an optometrist
- Weigh and measure students in preschool and grade K-4
- Record all screening procedure reports on health records and provides information for reports to the Indiana State Board of Health as required by state law and IDOE.
Report and maintain accurate and complete immunization records on all pupils as required by state law and school board policy #5020
Provide emergency nursing care for children when an illness or accident occurs during school hours on or near school property in accordance with board policy #5340
Provide first-aid in-service for all employees
Administer medication in accordance with state law and school board policies 5310/5320.01
Provide direction and consultation to designated personnel regarding medication administration
Provide mandatory in-service program for all employees concerning blood transmitted diseases per board policy #5360
Assist pupils and parents to comply with communicable disease laws and regulations for the protection of all pupils and school personnel
Provide direction as a resource person in matters pertaining to health as teachers are implementing curriculum
- Assist in health education when requested
- Present physical development films
Assist in planning and implementing services appropriate for pupils with special needs
Collaborate with the Director on the agenda for nursing meetings, keeping the Director knowledgeable about issues and concerns on the Nursing list; serve on Learning Connection.
Plan in-service and implements emergency evacuation for students that are in a wheelchair or have limited mobility
Maintain accurate and complete health records for all pupils
Discuss the school health program with the family and encourage a close relationship between the home and school in all health matters
Maintain a daily log of students seen in health clinics
Report to local authorities and building principal suspected cases of child abuse and/or neglect as required by state law.
Notify staff concerning students who have special health problems
Confer with parents, pupils and school personnel when pupils are involved in illnesses resulting in absences which are repetitive or of long duration

Secondary Functions of the Position:

Share knowledge of principles and methods of providing an environment conducive to good sanitation and hygiene
Maintain the Clinic in good working order and orders materials as needed.

Knowledge of:

Policies, procedures and functions of basic medical and nursing practices
Applicable software and applications.

Ability to:

Plan, organize, and schedule priorities.
Use independent judgment and initiative in making sound decisions and in developing solutions to problems.
Discreetly handle confidential and politically sensitive matters.
Make independent decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Tactfully and courteously respond to requests and inquiries/complaints from the general public and staff.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community

Equipment Used:

General office equipment (computer, telephone, copier, fax machine)
Medical supplies and equipment including AED

Place Where Work is Performed:

Work is performed throughout the district at the various school buildings and facilities.

Physical Demands:

Must be able to sit and /or stand for long periods of time.
Must be able to stoop, kneel or crouch.
Must be able to hear and speak clearly.
Must be able to lift items associated with being the School Nurse.
