Job Description

You will be the Principal Optical Engineer, leading optical design and analysis efforts for complex electro-optical systems, including military fire control, missile, and laser systems. Our team is responsible for delivering high-quality optical systems, and you will play a key role in conducting research and development, applying knowledge of geometrical and physical optics, and achieving desired results in hardware.

What You Will Be Doing
As the Principal Optical Engineer, you will be responsible for:

• Leading optical design and analysis efforts, including trading and refining optical system design architecture and models
• Optimizing optical component prescriptions and baselining design optical performance
• Performing optical tolerance analysis and trading athermalization architecture for flight test seekers
• Informing or performing stray light analysis and designing baffles and stops
• Supporting optics and optical mount mechanical design, reviewing and approving optics-related mechanical drawings
• Supporting updates to system range performance analysis and preparing for, conducting, and documenting design assurance reviews
• Supporting optical system integration, testing, and checkout, including performing and documenting optical design verification testing

MUST BE A U.S. CITIZEN - This position is located at a facility that requires special access. The selected candidate must be able to obtain a secret clearance.

Basic Qualifications

• Degree in Optics, Optical Engineering, or equivalent.
• Advanced aptitude in engineering mathematics and ability to correlate theory with hardware design and system response.
• Must be able to work in a highly diverse, interdisciplinary, collaborative multi-tasking, R&D or integrated product development team environment.
• Has, or ability to obtain, a US DoD Secret (or higher) security clearance.
• Good writing and oral communication skills.
• Ability to travel occasionally to support business need.
• Advanced proficiency in Windows/Microsoft Office Suite: Windows, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Desired skills

• 25+ years of related experience.
• Knowledge of geometrical and physical optics, optical aberration theory.
• High degree of fluency with CodeV (preferred) or Zemax software for optical design and tolerance analysis and performance optimization.
• Familiarity with optical materials, including infrared materials.
• Experienced in generating optics prescriptions for visible through long wave IR applications to support design layout, tolerances and detail lens drawings.
• Ability to troubleshoot and evaluate multi-spectral complex optical, electro-optical, and laser systems issues occurring during fabrication, assembly and test.
• Knowledge of optical component manufacturing, optical metrology techniques, and optical assembly manufacturing methods and mounting techniques.
• Capability to perform interferometric measurements, optical alignments and radiometric measurements
• Knowledge of basic radiometry and Electro-Optical analysis fundamentals.
• Proficient in the use of optical tooling, interferometers and optical inspection techniques.
• Capable of production line troubleshooting and evaluation of multi-spectral complex optical, electro-optical, and laser systems.
• Working knowledge of lasers and coherent beam analysis.
• Able to communicate effectively with mechanical designers and optics suppliers and assist with manufacturing issues.

Part-time Remote Telework: The employee selected for this position will work part of their work schedule remotely and part of their work schedule at a designated Lockheed Martin facility. The specific weekly schedule will be discussed during the hiring process.

Work Schedule Information

Lockheed Martin supports a variety of alternate work schedules that provide additional flexibility to our employees. Schedules range from standard 40 hours over a five day work week while others may be condensed. These condensed schedules provide employees with additional time away from the office and are in addition to our Paid Time off benefits.

National Pay Statement

Pay Rate: The annual base salary range for this position in California and New York (excluding most major metropolitan areas), Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, Vermont, Washington or Washington DC is $157,800 - $278,185. For states not referenced above, the salary range for this position will reflect the candidate’s final work location. Please note that the salary information is a general guideline only. Lockheed Martin considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/ training, key skills as well as market and business considerations when extending an offer. Benefits offered: Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, Short-Term Disability, Long-Term Disability, 401(k) match, Flexible Spending Accounts, EAP, Education Assistance, Parental Leave, Paid time off, and Holidays. (Washington state applicants only) Non-represented full-time employees: accrue at least 10 hours per month of Paid Time Off (PTO) to be used for incidental absences and other reasons; receive at least 90 hours for holidays. Represented full time employees accrue 6.67 hours of Vacation per month; accrue up to 52 hours of sick leave annually; receive at least 96 hours for holidays. PTO, Vacation, sick leave, and holiday hours are prorated based on start date during the calendar year. This position is incentive plan eligible.

Premium Pay Statement
