Position Duties

Under the supervision of the Customer Service Manager, investigates customer service complaints, reads and services water meters; and activates and terminates customer water service; performs other duties as assigned.

  • Travels assigned routes to record routine and "turn-on" or "turn-off" water meter readings.
  • Works at Meter Shop to test, clean, repair and replace malfunctioning water meters.
  • Investigates customer complaints and assists in locating the problem.
  • Inspects service line for breaks and leaks.
  • Cleans and maintains Meter Shop and related equipment, stock shelves, and clean the worksite to ensure it is left in a neat, safe, and acceptable condition.
  • Changes and installs water meters and radio read devices.
  • Identifies and reports illegal or improper use of water, inaccessible meters, and suspicious circumstances regarding water use.
  • Maintains accurate records of meter readings and repairs, and shop activity.
  • Uses handheld computer for meter reading and maintains the automatic meter reading software.
  • Assists in maintaining proper inventory of repair parts and supplies. 
  • Assists in maintaining tools and equipment in proper working order.
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance at work; accepts "on-call" rotations as assigned.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with fellow employees, other agencies, internal and external customers, officials and the general public.
  • Expected to temporarily perform duties outside of normal classification in the event of a declared emergency.  In the event that an employee is excused from work other than being sick, they will be required to report to work in a state of declared emergency.

Job KnowledgeComplete working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in water meter repair and reading, and in water service work; knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance; knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services, this includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction; knowledge of the applicable rules and regulations of water meter reading and repair; ability to develop and maintain accurate records and reports.
 
Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication:   Requires effective communication skills and the ability to provide assistance to customers both external and internal; ability to read in English and compare similarities and differences between words and series of numbers; ability to communicate effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs to the audience; ability to apply common sense understanding to the work process and procedures; ability to follow verbal and written instructions; ability to interpret, explain and apply rules and regulations in a fair and consistent manner.
 
Physical RequirementsWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk.  The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to stand, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.   Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
 
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
 
Work Environment:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions.  The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme heat; and risk of electrical shock.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Other Qualifications

Requires a valid Motor Vehicle Operators License, and.

Graduation from standard high school or GED equivalent, and
One (1) year of full-time work experience in the repair and maintenance of small mechanisms, and
Customer service work experience; 
 or
 Any combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
