Employment Type: This is a full-time, in-person role for the 2025-2026/2026-2027 school year.
Salary: The salary range for this role is $60,450-$69,550, and placement within that range will be based on years of experience in a similar role.
The Academic Counselor (AC) is responsible for implementing strong academic operations at Valor College Prep. The AC ensures compliance at the school, district, and state levels with student schedules, grades, graduation credits, and high stakes exams throughout the year. In addition to academic operations, the Academic Counselor role is also a relational one. The AC will regularly conference with students and families about students' academic progress, put together support plans to help keep students on track, and ultimately play a leading role in the celebration of students' success through the co-organization of end-of-year awards ceremonies and graduation. The AC will also support master scheduling, course advising, and academic data monitoring to ensure students are on track to meet graduation requirements and postsecondary goals. The core responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Academic Operations
Student Schedules
- Create the master schedule and roster students to courses through Valor’s primary Student Information System (Infinite Campus).
- Manage scheduling changes throughout the year, ensuring accuracy with AP course enrollment, data systems, Infinite Campus rosters, course catalog, and course placements.
- Ensure course codes are accurate and correctly apply toward student graduation requirements as well as meeting specific EE and EL student credit needs.
- Provide course advising during open course preference survey windows (e.g., host office hours, deliver parent/student presentations, respond to questions via email, and conduct advising meetings).
Student Grades
- Collaborate with the Director of Academic Operations to ensure 100% of teachers meet grading deadlines and adhere to school policies for grade entry.
- Oversee report card, progress report, and end-of-semester transcript distribution processes, including printing, mailing, distributing, and communicating with staff and caregivers.
- Facilitate grade change requests by assisting teachers with documentation, updating the student information system, updating cumulative files, and communicating changes to relevant stakeholders.
- Maintain course placement database and ensure that student records are up-to-date
High Stakes Testing
- Manage testing materials preparation and collection for major exams throughout the year (Practice ACT, ACT, AP, EOC, PSAT, benchmarks, CLEP).
- Communicate testing logistics with students and families (e.g., arrival/dismissal times, room numbers).
- Assist in planning and developing Valor College Prep’s yearly testing calendar.
- Work with the Director of Academic Operations to ensure compliance with all state and national testing accountability policies.
- Work with the Student Supports Team to coordinate legal accommodations for students receiving special services (EE, EL, 504).
- Awards & Recognition
- Use data to determine appropriate graduation awards and certificates for students based on academic and testing performance.
- Collaborate with the Director of Operations, FACE, Athletics, and external vendors to ensure proper regalia and cords for graduation.
- Co-plan graduation with the Director of Operations, supporting logistical needs including diploma organization, cap and gown ordering, venue preparation, tickets, documentation, student and staff rehearsals, and day-of logistics.
- Manage the nomination and selection process for end-of-year awards and assist teachers/leadership in determining recipients for assemblies, honor rolls, and other recognition events.
Academic Counseling and Support
- Monitor students’ academic progress on an ongoing basis; recommend appropriate interventions to improve academic performance as needed and follow up with students, caregivers, and teachers to ensure interventions are followed.
- Set up and monitor students’ progress in online learning modules.
- Make daily updates to academic health dashboards showcasing student progress and teacher fidelity to gradebook requirements.
- Provide guidance to individuals and groups of students to develop education, career, and postsecondary plans.
Credit Recovery
- Roster test delivery platforms, organize logistics for competency testing, and communicate with students and families who are at risk of failing courses.
- Oversee all aspects of credit recovery, including summer school, elective replacement, lunch/mentor school, and night school.
- Co-plan credit recovery programs with the Director of Academic Operations, including identification of students, coursework preparation, caregiver communication, reserving space, acquiring materials, and ensuring proper staffing.
- Ensure compliance with the Tennessee Department of Education’s regulations related to credit recovery.
- Update student records after successful completion of credit recovery programs.
- Monitor student engagement and attendance in credit recovery programs and initiate intervention strategies to increase participation and timely completion.
- Lead communication efforts about credit recovery and summer school with families, staff, and other school-based stakeholders.
- Serve as the point of contact for parents with credit recovery questions and provide necessary support.
School-Based Leadership Responsibilities
- Working with other leaders and administrators, pioneer network-wide and/or department-specific academic priorities rolled out each year or by quarter.
- Work as a member of the school-based leadership team to ensure effective and consistently implemented instructional and discipline-related systems and routines.
- Support school culture and academic data analysis alongside the school leadership team to identify gaps in data and effectively problem-solve.
- Participate in parent engagement and communication, including home visits, parent calls, and parent conferences.
- Participate as a key member of the high school hiring team by engaging in the interview and selection process for new candidates.
- Enforce, uphold, and exhibit the school’s values, student management policies, and culture.
- Own a duty or combination of duties (arrival, dismissal, prayer, lunch, transitions) totaling ~125 minutes/week, commensurate with other non-teaching staff.
- Attend family meetings, orientation, and other major school-wide events.
- Attend faculty Circle weekly.
- Strong project and time management skills; ability to effectively backwards plan, juggle multiple priorities with great attention to detail, and deliver consistent and timely results.
- Team player with strong interpersonal, stakeholder management, and relationship-building skills.

- Experience working in a high school setting or school-based operations role.
