Automotive Mechanic chez Kent County, MI

About the Department

Kent County Fleet Services is seeking a skilled Full-Time Automotive Mechanic and a Temporary Automotive Mechanic to join our team. This position is responsible for performing preventative maintenance and repairs on a wide range of vehicles, including automotive equipment, light trucks, and emergency vehicles. Work to be performed in a safe, clean, and new state-of-the-art shop or in the field. Uniforms, tools, and equipment are provided. Work schedule is Monday-Friday, 6 AM to 2:30 PM. ** The duration of the temporary position will be 4-5 months **

A successful candidate will have the following skills:

• Solid knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems
• Strong understanding of standard vehicle repair and maintenance practices
• Proficiency with diagnostic tools and common computer applications used in vehicle maintenance and repair
• Ability to read, interpret, and apply:
  • Electrical schematics
  • Mechanical drawings
  • Manufacturer's operating and maintenance manuals
  • Safety rules, regulations, and work requirements

• Perform inspections, maintenance, and repairs on County vehicles and equipment
• Install, service, and repair aftermarket police equipment such as:
  • Mobile radios
  • Emergency and warning lighting
  • Sirens and consoles
  • Video and body camera systems
  • Modem devices
  • Mobile laptop/tablet computer terminals
• Work in a safe, clean, and state-of-the-art facility or provide field support as needed

Minimum Qualifications

A high school diploma or GED, combined with post-secondary technical or apprenticeship training in automotive mechanics, and two years of experience in vehicle maintenance and repair, is required. 

An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered.

Must be able to work in a standing position for the entire length of the shift and be physically able to lift vehicle parts in excess of 75 pounds.
