The North Tonawanda Cogeneration facility, located in North Tonawanda, New York, is a 55-megawatt combined-cycle cogeneration plant. Opportunity Summary
The Mechanical / Electrical Technician at the North Tonawanda Cogeneration Facility provides hands-on support in maintaining and servicing mechanical and electrical equipment such as pumps, valves, fans, compressors, motors, and turbine components, working under the general direction of experienced technicians. Provides opportunities to learn diagnostic techniques, perform routine maintenance independently, and support plant upgrades and metal fabrication projects. The Technician also monitors auxiliary systems, records readings from meters, gauges, and instruments, and ensures accurate documentation in support of safe and reliable plant operations.
Your scope of responsibility as Mechanical / Electrical Technician includes the following primary functions:
Mechanical
- Support technicians in troubleshooting and diagnosing mechanical equipment by observing, identifying issues, and recommending corrective actions under guidance.
- Assist with repairing, replacing, dismantling, and inspecting plant equipment such as pumps, valves, fans, gearboxes, compressors, and turbine components, taking on more complex tasks as competence grows.
- Participate in piping installations and system modifications by preparing work areas, staging materials, and performing intermediate-level assembly tasks.
- Set up, maintain, and organize tools such as drill presses, grinders, and pipe-threading machines, taking responsibility for safe and efficient operation.
- Assist with welding, cutting, and metal fabrication by preparing materials, operating equipment under supervision, and ensuring adherence to quality standards.
- Perform routine maintenance independently, including tightening fittings, replacing gaskets, cleaning equipment, and lubricating moving parts, escalating issues when needed.
- Contribute to preventive maintenance programs by conducting inspections, completing routine tasks, documenting findings, and entering data into CMMS.
Electrical
- Assist technicians with electrical maintenance tasks such as cable pulls, conduit installation, wire labeling, and staging materials, taking initiative to learn wiring practices and standards.
- Support the installation, inspection, and replacement of electrical components including motors, breakers, switches, fuses, lighting, and wiring, performing tasks under guidance with increasing independence.
- Maintain electrical cabinets and panels by cleaning, organizing, and replacing minor components, ensuring reliability and compliance with standards.
- Record, analyze, and report equipment readings from meters, gauges, and panels, noting trends or abnormal conditions.
- Provide support during electrical testing by setting up tools, operating auxiliary equipment, and assisting technicians with preparatory and follow-up tasks.
- Help manage electrical spare parts inventory by organizing components, restocking, assisting with audits, and providing input on inventory needs.
- Follow all safety and environmental rules, including proper use of PPE and adherence to lockout/tagout procedures, and provide guidance to plant personnel when applicable.
- Perform additional duties to support plant operations and maintenance, including assisting multiple departments, learning new tasks, and taking on incremental responsibilities as competence grows.

Working Relationships
The Mechanical / Electrical Technician reports directly to the Maintenance Manager and receives general direction from other plant management. This role involves interfacing with contractors and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) personnel to ensure necessary support and coordination.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, climbing stairs and ladders, working from elevated platforms and walkways at varying heights, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds.
Power plant environment that may involve entering confined spaces, crawling through narrow areas, and handling hazardous materials, with exposure to fumes, extreme temperatures, and noise. Work may include high heat near equipment and varying outdoor weather conditions.
Some duties may require the use of protective equipment, which can include hard hats, safety glasses, and eye protection, air masks/respirators, ear protection, chemical suits, flame-resistant clothing (FRC), hot gloves, high-voltage protective gear, and fall protection. Fit testing for respirators may be required. Strict smoking restrictions apply in and around the facility.
Fitness for Duty
All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program, which includes a post-offer physical examination, drug screening, and post-employment random drug screening.
Work Schedule
The Mechanical / Electrical Technician works a standard Monday to Friday day shift schedule, ensuring consistent plant operation and support during regular business hours. This position will also occasionally necessitate extended working hours and flexible shifts as needed, including weekends and holidays, in response to schedules, workload demands, and plant conditions. Periodic callouts or “On call” status may also be required.
Compensation
This position offers a base pay rate ranging from $34 to $38 per hour, along with an annual performance bonus.
Core Qualifications and Skills
We are looking for a motivated Maintenance Technician with an interest in power plant operations and maintenance, eager to support the team, learn new skills, and contribute to safe and reliable plant performance.
- An Associate degree in Power Plant Technology, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering Technology, Process Technology, or a related field is a plus. Equivalent technical training or relevant industry/military experience may also be considered.
- Some experience in industrial or power-generating facilities, or in related trades such as mechanical, electrical, or construction support, with ability to take on progressively more challenging tasks.
- Basic understanding of plant equipment and systems, able to assist with preventive and corrective maintenance, perform simple troubleshooting, and support technicians in identifying issues.
- Strong attention to safety, including proper use of PPE, following environmental/regulatory standards, and awareness of potential hazards.
- Ability to assemble, disassemble, and handle mechanical/electrical equipment safely using hand tools, power tools, and basic shop equipment, performing routine tasks under guidance.
- Competence in taking and recording readings from meters, gauges, and instruments, recognizing unusual conditions, and reporting concerns appropriately.
- Works well in teams, coordinating with staff and contractors to help ensure tasks are completed safely and on schedule.
- Clear communication skills, including following instructions, asking questions when needed, documenting work, and sharing suggestions to improve processes.
- Shows initiative, willingness to learn, and readiness to take on greater responsibilities toward becoming a capable maintenance technician.
- Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. driver’s license and ensure it remains in good standing at all times.
