About the Department

This position is responsible for locating underground water/wastewater utilities.

Position Duties

  • Receives and processes locate requests; closes work orders upon completion.
  • Locates and marks water and wastewater lines and infrastructure.
  • Assists contractors in locating underground utilities.
  • Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintain records of daily locates.
  • Performs related duties.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of underground utility locating principles and practices.
  • Knowledge and skill in the operation of underground utility locating devices & software.
  • Knowledge of map reading principles.
  • Knowledge of area streets and roads.
  • Skill in interpreting engineering reports, maps, and construction drawings.
  • Skill in the use of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Skill in the preparation of reports.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

Other Qualifications

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Water and/or Wastewater Manager assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

Guidelines include department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of related utility location duties.Inclement weather and field conditions contribute to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to locate and mark underground utilities. Successful performance contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of a variety of construction and maintenance projects.

CONTACTS

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other department personnel, contractors, property owners, and members of the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, and to provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed outdoors while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, or walking. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color and utilizes the sense of smell.
  • The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc. The employee works in the presence of underground excavation, high pressure lines and biohazards.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A high school diploma or GED AND one (1) year of relevant utility locating, construction, or closely related experience OR any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.
  • Possession of a valid Wyoming driver's license for vehicle operating.
  • May be required to obtain other licenses and/or certifications required to perform the functions of the position within a specified period of time.
  • May be required to lift and/or carry heavy, bulky supplies, materials, and/or other items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • May be exposed to dangerous machinery, potential physical harm, extreme weather conditions, and infectious diseases.
